A new variant of the MIMAIL worm has been found in the wild. As of January 26, 2004 1:47 PM (US Pacific Time), TrendLabs™ has declared a yellow alert due to the propagation potential of WORM_MIMAIL.R.
This mass-mailing worm first identified by Trend Micro in the US, has the ability to generate random email subjects, message bodies and attachment file names. This worm also has backdoor capabilities.
Similar to other variants of the MIMAIL worm, MIMAIL.R spreads via email using SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol).
The worm propagates in the English language and is 22,528 bytes in size.
It runs on Windows 98, ME, NT, 2000 and XP.
