IBM Launches New Workplace Offerings for Organizations of Any Size or Industry

SOMERS, N.Y., November 9, 2004 - IBM today announced an array of new software solutions and products designed to help customers accelerate their migration from traditional PC-centric computing deployments to standards-based, network-centric workplaces. With new IBM Workplace products and solutions, the business benefits of the Workplace model are more accessible to companies of almost any size (small businesses to large corporations) and any vertical industry (such as retail, automotive, banking). IBM Workplace based software, services, and solutions can deliver significant productivity improvements in people intensive business processes like procurement, regulatory compliance, field service, retail store management, branch banking, and many others.

Today's IBM Workplace offerings are designed to help organizations transform both their core technology infrastructure, as well as their key business processes, and extend the reach of their existing applications in a unified, roles-based IBM Workplace environment.

"There is a fundamental shift underway as it relates to the front-end of computing. People need on demand access to experts, processes and information to make better and more informed decisions in shorter periods of time," said Ambuj Goyal, General Manager, Workplace, Portal and Collaboration Software, IBM. "With today's new IBM Workplace offerings, customers of any size and from any industry can transform and optimize their people-intensive business processes, as well as deliver significant business velocity, by moving beyond the time-consuming and expensive roll-outs of PC-centric business solutions."

Extending the Benefits of Workplace to Organizations of Almost Any Size One of the initial steps for organizations moving to an open, flexible Workplace environment is deploying standards-based technology that will optimize IT infrastructure and provide end users with a modular approach to integrating collaborative applications and tools and resources within the IBM Workplace environment. IBM is leveraging experience and leadership in the areas of  ollaboration and web portals to deliver a set of Workplace products and solutions designed to accelerate this technology transformation, for customers ranging from large enterprises down to small businesses.

IBM Workplace offerings designed to ease this technology transformation include the following:

IBM Workplace Services Express v2.0. A new software solution based on a Workplace model designed for the small and mid-sized organizations and departments in large enterprises. The software includes team collaboration, document management, web forms, task lists, and portal services and a new easy-to-use and easy-to-customize templates-based model for creating composite services to speed implementation. IBM Workplace Services Express also provides direct access to the user's existing applications and data, as well as e-mail, calendar, and address book, and a range of collaboration tools including integrated instant messaging. IBM Workplace Services Express v2.0 will be available in 30 days, and pricing will be announced upon availability.

IBM WebSphere Portal 5.1. Extending IBM's leadership position in the portal market, the new version of WebSphere Portal dramatically increases the business value of your portal deployments. WebSphere Portal can help employees and trading partners make faster decisions and improve their productivity by delivering the unique capability of linking business processes with the portal experience via an orchestrated workflow. With support for virtual portals, the value of WebSphere Portal can be quickly delivered to new communities at a lower cost. Since any first-class portal demands up-to-date and accurate content, a new integrated, limited use version of Lotus Workplace Web Content Management is also included. As employees contribute and add value to existing intellectual capital via WebSphere Portal, enhanced search and document management technology now allows portal users to rapidly respond to customer requests and market opportunities. IBM WebSphere Portal will be available on November 30, 2004, and pricing will be announced upon availability.

IBM Lotus Web Conferencing Service. IBM Lotus Web Conferencing Service enables organizations to quickly and easily deploy Web conferencing without an investment in new IT resources or skills. An internet connection, Web browser and telephone are all that is needed to access this service. With this new offering, IBM is one of the first vendors to market a leading Web conferencing solution that can be deployed as a utility service, software product, or both, offering customers greater convenience and flexibility in meeting their Web conferencing needs. IBM Lotus Web Conferencing Service uniquely integrates audio and Web conferencing services into a seamless experience designed to enhance the productivity and business value of Web conferences. The service will be available on demand from IBM and will be offered through pay-per-use and subscription usage plans. IBM Lotus Web Conferencing Service is the latest addition to IBM's software-as-a-service portfolio. IBM works with many independent software vendors (ISVs) and application providers to assess, transform and deploy their software as a service to hundreds of customers and thousands of users worldwide. IBM Lotus Web Conferencing Service will be available in December of 2004, and final pricing will be announced upon availability.

Transforming Business Processes with Industry-Specific Solutions

Industry experts and technology analysts have indicated that changing market dynamics are causing many companies to rethink how they purchase and deliver information technology to employees. The introduction of a range of pervasive devices, the availability of networked resources and the adoption of open standards are several factors behind the demand for new computing models.

The IBM Workplace products are designed to fit this new delivery model and are based on an open standards environment that allows implementation of the Workplace environment to be customized specifically based on a person's role or vertical industry. IBM has conducted extensive research to identify the appropriate set of Workplace tools and technologies, patterns and ISV applications that will help people become more effective and productive, based on their industry and their role within a particular organization. This research has lead to the development of a variety of Workplace solutions that provide industry-specific "blueprints" on how to assemble Workplace environments optimized for specific roles, by industry and for delivery on the device that best suits that person's needs.

IBM Workplace Solutions can facilitate organizational transformation by accelerating an organization's ability to understand the user environment, and what people need in order to focus on the high value elements of their jobs. IBM's new roles-based solutions include the following:

IBM Workplace Solutions includes over 17 new solutions, encompassing over 30 individual job functions and employee roles. IBM Workplace Solutions are role-based frameworks to help customers apply IBM Workplace technologies faster and more productively. These solutions leverage IBM's industry expertise, insights and analysis of various business applications. These solutions are designed to provide 'short-cuts' for creating high performance role-based workplace environments, accelerating time-to-value. Workplace Solutions enhance IBM's Middleware Industry Solutions by enabling people to easily connect with the information, applications and business processes they need -- when they need them. IBM Middleware Industry Solutions draw on IBM's rich portfolio of software products and services, as well as on ISV applications and other business partner skills to enable our customers to address some of their most pressing business issues. Workplace solutions are now available for several industries including: Retail, Electronics, Manufacturing, Finance, Telecommunications, Government, Life Sciences, Healthcare and Automotive.

IBM Workplace for Business Controls and Reporting v2.5. The latest version of IBM's role-based Workplace for Business Controls and Reporting is a product designed to help companies manage and assess their internal business controls. The offering provides corporations with the ability to document, monitor and test internal controls that can help manage financial reporting practices in a sustainable manner. Specifically, the new version allows organizations to help drive down the cost of control with new features to help manage organizational change, simplify auditing and help improve performance through an update option that ensures different departments have the most current data at their fingertips. Flexibility in reporting with partner solutions from Business Objects, Cognos, Brio/Hyperion, and Microstrategy and others such as Bowstreet allows customers to further leverage current investments. IBM Workplace for Business Controls and Reporting is available now.

IBM Workplace for Branch Banking solution. This latest version of IBM's role-based Workplace for Branch Banking is designed to help retail banks increase sales, improve customer services and enhance the productivity of their customer-facing employees. This solution provides role-based environments for branch managers, tellers and platform officers to simplify and personalize their interactions with relevant information, collaboration tools and applications, including human resources, customer relationship management, and other banking-specific software. The IBM Workplace for Branch Banking solution allows branch managers to have access to Branch Performance Indicators, incentive and campaign management tools to increase sales. Tellers and platform officers have a holistic view of complete customer information and tools for cross-selling, upselling and to view personal employee information (i.e. benefits, performance, learning). The Workplace for Branch Banking extends the capabilities of the IBM Middleware Solution for Banking Branch Transformation, which includes several offerings that support bank customer requirements to build applications; create a stable, secure infrastructure; and effectively manage a distributed branch network. IBM Workplace for Branch Banking is available now.

IBM Workplace is a software platform for the next generation of end user working environments that blends collaborative tools, applications and connections into a single environment designed to meet particular business needs. IBM Workplace builds on investments in Lotus Notes/Domino, Lotus Workplace, WebSphere Portal and WebSphere Everyplace. IBM continues to build on this vision today with the delivery of technology enhancements, new services and industry solutions that offer appropriate access to the people, processes and information and help customers transform their business to the Workplace model.
