J.D. EDWARDS REPORTS REVENUE GROWTH AND SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVED PROFITABILITY FOR THE THIRD QUARTER ENDED JULY 31, 2002
Revenue and Earnings Grow Sequentially and Over Prior Year; Earnings Per Share Grow to $0.08
 
DENVER, August 21, 2002 – J.D. Edwards & Company (Nasdaq: JDEC) today reported financial results for the third quarter ended July 31, 2002. 
 
Profitability in the third quarter of fiscal 2002 improved significantly over the third quarter of fiscal 2001.  Pro forma operating income was $14 million, up from a loss of $8 million in the third quarter of fiscal 2001.  Pro forma net income grew to $10 million, or $0.08 per diluted share, compared to a pro forma loss of $3 million, or a loss of $0.03 per diluted share in the same period of fiscal 2001. 
 
Total revenue grew 9% to $229 million, from $209 million in the third quarter of fiscal 2001.  License fee revenue grew 10% to $55 million, compared to $50 million in the same period of fiscal 2001.  Services revenue was $174 million, up 9% from $159 million in the third quarter of fiscal 2001.
 
For the nine months ended July 31, 2002, total revenue was $657 million, compared to $653 million for the same period of fiscal 2001.  Pro forma net income for the first nine months of fiscal 2002 was $21 million, or $0.18 per diluted share, compared to a pro forma loss of $110,000 or $0.00 per diluted share, for the same period last year.
 
Actual net income, including acquisition-related and other charges, was $9 million, or $0.08 per diluted share for the third quarter of fiscal 2002, compared to a net loss of $186 million, or a loss of $1.65 per diluted share, in the third quarter of fiscal 2001.  A reconciliation of actual results to pro forma results is provided as supplemental information on the attached “Consolidated Statements of Operations.”
 
“Our Q3 results validate that the turnaround of J.D. Edwards continues to build momentum,” said J.D. Edwards Chairman, President, and CEO, Bob Dutkowsky.  “Our revenue and profitability exceeded expectations and grew sequentially as well as year-over-year.  We also further strengthened our balance sheet and increased our cash position.  While we still have further opportunity to improve, the Company’s turnaround is well under way.”

·          Released a number of new products and functionality.  New products and enhanced functionality released since the last earnings release include:

·          J.D. Edwards 5.  J.D. Edwards 5 is a new, comprehensive family of innovative, collaborative enterprise software products and services.  J.D. Edwards 5 includes seven product lines: Enterprise Resource Planning, Customer Relationship Management, Supply Chain Management, Supplier Relationship Management, Business Intelligence, Collaboration and Integration, and Tools and Technology.  It also includes a unified set of consulting, implementation, training and support services.

·          ERP 8.0.  As part of J.D. Edwards 5, ERP 8.0 includes significant upgrades to the Company’s enterprise resource planning software.  The improvements, which focus on optimizing employee resources and effectively managing high-value assets, will especially benefit companies in services industries.

·          Supply Chain Management.  New applications and enhanced supply chain functionality include Demand Consensus, a unique collaborative forecasting application, Tactical Network Optimization, a production optimization product specifically designed for the mid-market, and Demand Planning.  Demand Planning works in tandem with the Demand Consensus applications to create a true collaborative forecasting environment across the supply chain.  This helps businesses improve supply chain predictability, reduce inventories, avoid stockouts, lower production costs and improve overall customer satisfaction.

·          Signed new license agreements.  The Company signed agreements for its collaborative solutions with customers including Land O’Lakes, Inc., Fidelity Employer Services, Bush Brothers & Company, Commonwealth Industries, Cardinal Health, Inc., F. Schumacher & Co., and Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing ‘3M’ in the United States; W.C. Wood Company, Limited, Luscar Ltd., and CFM Corporation in Canada; Elementis plc and Pernod-Ricard in Europe; and Moto Honda da Amazonia Ltda in Latin America.
