Sophos’s New Wireless Access Point AP 5 Adds WLAN Capabilities to Sophos RED appliances
New USB wireless access point provides WLAN for remote offices
BOSTON, MA – August 9, 2012 – IT security and data protection company Sophos today announced the availability of the Sophos AP 5, its new wireless access point. The new addition to Sophos's wireless access point family is an accessory to the Sophos Remote Ethernet Device RED 10, adding WLAN functionality to it.
The AP 5 supports the 2.4 GHz frequency band and is compliant to the IEEE 802.11 b/g/n WLAN standards. It can transmit a single SSID and supports up to 5 users, delivering wireless data rates up to 150 Mbit/s under best conditions. Deployment is quite easy: The Sophos AP 5 simply needs to be connected to the USB interface of the RED interface. It then automatically appears in the Sophos UTM user interface and becomes operational within minutes.
"We frequently have been asked to extend the innovative Sophos RED (Remote Ethernet Device) devices by WLAN capabilities", said Martin Becker, product manager, Sophos Network Security. "With the AP 5, we are now meeting this demand. Having a dedicated wireless access point instead of a new Sophos RED appliance has two major benefits: First, it allows us to extend RED appliances that are already in the field; second, it could also be used on Sophos UTM appliances in the future."
Like all wireless access points from Sophos, the AP 5 is centrally managed through Sophos UTM, which acts as a wireless controller. More information on AP 5 and Sophos's Wireless Protection solution is available at:
