Arnhem, 23 januari 2012 - SIDN, het bedrijf achter .nl, heeft vandaag een 5-jarig contract ondertekend met NLnet Labs. NLnet Labs is het Nederlandse expertisecentrum op het gebied van internet technologie en is wereldwijd erkend voor het werk op het gebied van DNS en DNSSEC. SIDN stelt met de financiële ondersteuning van NLnet Labs de verdere ontwikkeling van onder meer DNS-applicaties zoals Unbound en NSD, maar ook het algemene internet R&D-werk van NLnet Labs, voor de komende vijf jaar zeker.
Internetgemeenschap
Not-for-profit organisatie NLnet Labs is in 1999 opgericht en heeft als doel het ontwikkelen van open source software en een bijdrage te leveren aan het ontwikkelen van open standaarden. De door NLnet Labs ontwikkelde DNS software Unbound wordt onder andere gebruikt door grote Nederlandse internet service providers als Xs4All en T-Mobile. Daarnaast levert NLnet Labs een belangrijke bijdrage aan de ontwikkeling en standaardisatie van DNSSEC. Dit is een beveiligingsuitbreiding op het huidige DNS-protocol die ervoor zorgt dat internetgebruikers zeker weten dat ze niet op een malafide website terechtkomen terwijl ze wel de juiste domeinnaam hebben gebruikt.

SIDN heeft een hard groeiend abonneebestand met meer dan 4,5 miljoen .nl-domeinnamen voor wie dagelijks zo'n miljard zoekopdrachten succesvol worden afgehandeld. Daarmee heeft SIDN een leidende positie op het mondiale internet. SIDN heeft een actieve rol in de technische, beleidsmatige en politieke ontwikkelingen van het internet op nationaal en mondiaal niveau. Over NLnet Labs
The Internet's strength is that it allows people to connect and communicate with all others on the Internet without, in theory, the need for special provisions elsewhere than at the end-nodes. This allows people to publish, provide services, to purchase, read, and consume in a global and truly free manner. In our view the success of the Internet is coupled to the success of open source and open standards development. The TCP/IP stack, web browsers, scripting languages, popular databases, core infrastructure, popular operating systems have all been at the foundation of the net's success and the net has been a driver for the proliferation of all these tools. Within that context NLnet Labs has become a recognized expertise centre in the area of DNS and DNSSEC. Our software has found its way to important components of the Internet infrastructure and we contribute actively in multiple facets of the standards development process. Dissemination of knowledge is done through education and collaboration.
History
NLnet Labs was founded in 1999 by Stichting NLnet. It started with a team of two employees working on the DNSSEC project. The budget of NLnet Labs is based on long term investment for development with a staff of five to six people and mainly provided through a subsidy by the Stichting NLnet.
Mission
NLnet Labs was founded to develop, implement, evaluate, and promote new protocols and applications for the Internet. Its activities are focused on topics directly relating to the Internet's infrastructure, such as DNS, DNSSEC, IPv6, and routing.
