JUNIPER NETWORKS PLAYS KEY ROLE IN MILITARY COMMUNICATIONS INTEROPERABILITY

Routing, Security and WAN Acceleration Solutions Enable Secure, Reliable Military Test Network; Improve Application Performance by 80%

SUNNYVALE, Calif., September 7th., 2006 - Juniper Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ:
JNPR) today announced that it has successfully participated in the Coalition Warrior Interoperability Demonstration (CWID) 2006. Juniper provided network routers, application acceleration and security technology to QinetiQ, one of the world's leading defence and security technology companies, for the core infrastructure deployed within the UK portion of the CWID trials.

CWID is an invitation-only annual event staged by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the U.S. Combatant Commands, the British Ministry of Defence (MOD) and other international military bodies to test strategic communications technologies in a controlled operational environment. The network built by QinetiQ was accredited by CESG (the British Government's technical authority for Information Assurance) to SECRET level for the event.

"The aim of CWID is to allow the MOD and its coalition partners to de-risk the development and planning of future defence technology, said Wing Commander Stephen Borthwick, Royal Air Force, who was in overall charge of the UK's portion of CWID 2006. "It is a unique opportunity to test leading edge technology in a fully operational setting where different systems, technologies and vendors have to work in a fully interoperable and cooperative manner.

"Juniper Networks was invited to contribute a wide range of its technologies to enable QinetiQ to build the core network," said Borthwick. "The availability, security and performance of the network were critical to the success of the event, and Juniper's technologies performed extremely well, both as standalone solutions but also in terms of their ability to interoperate with and support all the other systems and technologies involved."

The core network, supported by Juniper Networks M-series routers, was secured by a combination of Juniper Networks ISG 2000, Juniper Networks NetScreen-500 and NetScreen-204 integrated firewall/VPNs devices, working inline with Juniper Networks IDP 200 and IDP 1100 devices. The Juniper Networks firewall/VPN and IDP security devices deployed in the CWID network were centrally managed by NetScreen-Security Manager. The Juniper Networks WX 55 WAN application acceleration platforms were deployed to optimise the numerous defence applications running across the CWID network. The devices were deployed at either end of a low-bandwidth Cormorant digital communications link connecting the two main headquarters facilities. Qinetic reported that the WX platform deployment achieved application optimization in excess of 80 percent during the three-week exercise, increasing the effective Cormorant bandwidth by a factor of more than six.

"Juniper worked closely with the QinetiQ team during the network design phase, provided the relevant Juniper equipment, worked with the QinetiQ and military staff to optimise its use and to support the event," said Viv Danks, CWID Technical Director at QinetiQ. "The equipment worked exactly as specified, was reliable and secure, and the results achieved by the WX platforms in particular were very impressive. The whole experience was very positive."

"There are few customers more demanding or mission-critical than the military, especially when various international organizations have joined forces to evaluate and select best-of-breed technologies on which to base their future communications infrastructure," said Gert-Jan Schenk, vice president of operations EMEA, Juniper Networks. "By performing so successfully at CWID 2006, Juniper has proven its ability to provide the highest level of secure and assured networking."

CWID provides a robust opportunity for the international military community to evaluate command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance solutions by creating lifelike combat and terrorist threat scenarios. Accredited IT vendors deploy their equipment within these scenarios over a two-week period, with more than 20 international participants involved in over 25 sites globally. A full report on this year's assessments will be issued by the CWID team later in the year.
