Borland Announces Three-Year JBuilder® Product Roadmap
Future JBuilder Products Build on Eclipse Framework, Bringing Innovative New Productivity and Collaboration Features to Next Generation Java Developers

May 2006 — Today, the Developer Tools Group of Borland Software Corporation (NASDAQ NM: BORL) announced details around a three-year product roadmap for JBuilder®, its award-winning Java Integrated Development Environment (IDE). The roadmap includes an update to JBuilder 2006, a new underlying framework based on Eclipse in JBuilder 2007 (“Peloton”), and provides insight into the functionality being developed in future JBuilder versions. Future capabilities for the product line include new team collaboration and developer productivity features, support for new Java standards and emerging open source tools and frameworks, enhanced support for Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), and more.

The JBuilder roadmap is being presented at this week’s JavaOne conference in San Francisco, Calif. and to customers and prospects throughout the world during Borland’s 2006 Global Developer Road Show .

“Over the coming years JBuilder will continue to provide the same innovative features and ease-of-use that users have come to expect from the JBuilder franchise, but will increasingly appeal to developers who want to leverage Eclipse plug-ins, open source tools and emerging development paradigms like SOA,” said Michael Swindell, senior director of product management for Borland’s Developer Tools Group. “As we form the new developer-focused organization, we’re committed to moving JBuilder and our other IDE products into the future – continuing Borland’s tradition of simplifying complex development problems and helping customers build better software, faster.”

Borland’s Developer Tools Group is already working to deliver on this three-year roadmap with:
· A free JBuilder 2006 Foundation edition available for download today
· Two new JBuilder 2006 updates planned for release this year
· The next major release of JBuilder codenamed “Peloton” expected to be available in Q4

JBuilder 2006 and JBuilder “Peloton”
JBuilder 2006, already shipping, began the transition of JBuilder to a more collaborative team development environment with features such as shared code editor views and joint debugging capabilities. These features allow local and remote developers to jointly design, edit and debug applications in real time.

JBuilder, which has a history of offering Java developers a way to simplify and harness the latest technologies and Java standards, will continue to support the latest JCP standards as they become available. As such, the Developer Tools Group expects to release an update to JBuilder 2006 in June to support Java SE 6 (“Mustang”) and an additional service pack in the Fall once Mustang is formally released by Sun Microsystems.

“Peloton” or JBuilder 2007, which is expected to be released in Q4 2006, will then marry the number one commercial Java development environment with the extensible open source Eclipse framework. By leveraging an Eclipse foundation moving forward, JBuilder will offer the flexibility and cost-efficiencies of an open platform, while providing the enterprise-class functionality and productivity advances that make Eclipse and open source tools even more attractive to large enterprises.

In addition to providing developers with simplified access to a rich community of Eclipse plug-ins, JBuilder Peloton will also provide enhanced support for visual EJB and Web Services design and development. It will support the same kind of team collaboration features available now in JBuilder 2006 and will be compatible with JBuilder 2006 projects. This enables customers to move forward, leverage and extend their existing investments, while capitalizing on new JBuilder capabilities and the growing Eclipse ecosystem of plug-ins.

Future Peloton customers can also anticipate new innovations such as an intent-based user interface that provides a consolidated view of the developer’s project responsibilities, regardless of whether they are represented as tasks, requirements or defects. The Developer Tools Group will be providing a preview of some of these new JBuilder Peloton capabilities at JavaOne in Booth #220.

Future Versions of JBuilder
Moving forward, the JBuilder roadmap includes new Rapid Application Development (RAD) web development tooling. The center of gravity in web development is a complex mix of runtimes and frameworks, including powerful offerings from the Open Source community like Spring, Hibernate and Shale. New tooling capabilities within future versions of JBuilder should help developers address this complexity and better leverage the flexibility and value that Open Source Systems can provide.

In addition, future versions of JBuilder are expected to include an SOA cockpit that greatly simplifies and expands the developer’s capabilities in building SOA applications. SOA tooling today is a disparate set of tools and JBuilder going forward will provide a better way to develop, assemble, orchestrate and deploy SOA applications through a single tooling environment.

Future versions of JBuilder are also expected to support additional open source tools and frameworks, further integrations with Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) products from Borland and others, and continue the JBuilder tradition of supporting the latest versions of application servers and emerging Java standards, such as EJB 3.0 and JEE5.
