BT TO PROVIDE A EUROPE-WIDE MPLS NETWORK AND VOIP SOLUTION FOR BASF
BT today announced that it has been awarded a contract by leading global chemical company BASF for the provision of its pan-European data network. Connecting in excess of 200 sites, the network offers BASF the flexibility to cope with future requirements, in addition to enabling it to cut costs.
Based on Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) technology, BT's IP network enables different types of traffic to be prioritised according to importance or need. At selected sites, BT will migrate BASF's traditional telephony over to Voice over IP (VoIP). By prioritising business critical applications, BASF will be able to benefit from improved performance and greater efficiency.
BT won the contract against strong competition. An important factor in the decision was BT's technical expertise and experience in owning and operating one of the world's largest MPLS networks.
Fareed Mohammed, Director Information Systems Technology and Architecture at BASF in Ludwigshafen, said: "We felt from the outset that BT had a good understanding of our requirements and the special characteristics of our company. Working with standardised products, the BT team developed a solution that was ideal for us."
Norbert Franchi, BT's Sales Director in Germany, said: "It was particularly important for BASF to have access to uniform products and processes across their European sites. This is exactly the strength of BT as a global company: Thanks to our harmonised portfolio, we were able to meet this requirement precisely."
In the future BT's MPLS network will connect BASF sites in 39 countries. The main focus will remain in Europe with additional sites being added in North America, Africa and Asia. The contract will run for five years.
