Juniper Networks Announces Compliance with DSL Forum Architecture Recommended for DSL Service Evolution

E-series Delivers Technical Report TR-059 Requirements Today For Delivering an Assured User Experience

SUNNYVALE, Calif., September 22, 2003-Juniper Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq:
JNPR) today announced that its industry-leading E-series routing platform meets the specifications outlined in the new DSL Forum TR-059 (Technical Report) designed to help drive an evolution of mass-market, premium DSL services, such as multicast audio and video media, video on demand, interactive gaming and content distribution.

TR-059, which was ratified and issued by the DSL Forum this month, recommends a common methodology for delivering Quality of Service (QoS)-enabled applications to DSL subscribers, as well as the hardware and software interfaces required by vendors to support an architecture for applications and services over DSL. The TR-059 architecture recommends that the service delivery enforcement reside in the B-RAS versus the access node, such as a DSLAM, because this approach enables service providers and their content provider partners to introduce multiple revenue-generating services with an assured service experience.

For example, a service provider can offer more than a 'best effort'
service and can guarantee a connection for the user that is optimized for the content being delivered. In addition, by enabling service control in the B-RAS, service providers have a common service point for xDSL, PON, 802.11 and any type of broadband media access.

'With compliance to the DSL Forum TR-059 recommendation, Juniper Networks is well positioned to continue to grow its broadband aggregation customer base and market share,' said Jennifer Liscom, principal analyst, Gartner Group. 'Today Juniper garners more than 50 percent of the total worldwide Broadband market, having held that position since Gartner began tracking this market almost two years ago.
Features in its edge routers such as IP multicast, QoS and hierarchical queuing, which enable revenue-generating services today, is why Juniper's track record has been so successful.'

Juniper Networks E-series routing platform is uniquely suited to the TR-059 architecture because it was designed to deliver very granular IP QoS from the outset. With its unique Subscriber Class-based Queuing, Hierarchical Round Robin Algorithms, and policy management capabilities, the E-series routing platform manages bandwidth on a per user, application and service basis. Shipping since early 1999, the E-series cost-effectively scales services with subscriber growth and delivers B-RAS with rich subscriber management capabilities that comply today with the TR-059. Juniper Networks SDX-300 Service Deployment System, which works in conjunction with the E-series, complements the TR-059 because it enables service providers and enterprises to rapidly create, deploy and manage a host of new services, individualize and assure their subscribers' experience, while at the same time retaining full control of their underlying networks.

'The requirements outlined in the TR-059 are a perfect fit for the capabilities of the E-series,' said Judy Beningson, vice president of product management, Juniper Networks. 'The flexible ASIC-based architecture of the E-series is enabling leading service providers worldwide to deliver an assured user experience and derive revenue today from the QoS applications referenced in the DSL Forum report. In addition, we're pleased to see that the Model for Integrated Transformation (MINT) is so well aligned with TR-059 and supported by our customers in public venues such as the DSL Forum.'
