JUNIPER NETWORKS IPV6 and JGN TRANSFORM THE NEXT-GENERATION NETWORK

One of the World's Largest IPv6 Test Networks Deploys Juniper Networks M20 Routers

SUNNYVALE, Calif., November 12, 2002 - Juniper Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: JNPR), a leading provider of trusted infrastructures for the New Public Network, today announced that Japan Gigabit Network (JGN), the official research institute to lead the research and development of the Next Generation Telecommunication network for Japan, has deployed Juniper Networks M20 routers at its Okayama Interoperability and Evaluation Lab, Telecommunications Advancement Organization of Japan.

As one of the research centers for JGN, the Okayama is focused on the deployment of IPv6 as a next-generation protocol and an alternative to IPv4. The Okayama test bed has attracted considerable attention as a site where the next-generation network is being constructed, verified and evaluated. As one of the world's largest IPv6 test with backbone routers from vendors around the world at the site, the Okayama has deployed Juniper Networks M20 routers throughout the network.

"The Juniper Networks M20 routers have won a reputation for reliability and performance in both an IPv4 environment and IPv6 environment," said Kazumasa Kobayashi, Ph. D., research director, Okayama Interoperability and Evaluation Lab. "Routers purchased today will be used for many years and Juniper has a clear vision for migration to IPv6. Along with Juniper Networks, we hope to create a new market with the benefits of IPv6. The ability to transform the JGN network over time to include new JUNOS software features such as OSPFv3 is essential to this goal."

Industry-standard OSPFv3 is a new feature available in JUNOS Version 5.5. This important routing protocol expands the global deployment options for IPv6 by offering service providers a choice of Interdomain Routing Protocols (IGPs). While OSPFv3 employs the same basic mechanism for generating the network topology as OSPF for IPv4, it is also optimized for tighter integration with IPv6. In particular, modifications have been made to accommodate the differences in IPv6 address size and semantics.

Japan is the one of the world's pioneers in deploying IPv6 networks. The IPv6 protocol extends Internet growth by increasing the number of available addresses for Internet-enabled devices, delivering enhancements to security, quality of service (QoS), and auto-configuration capabilities. With its greatly expanded addressing and IP services capabilities, Juniper Networks IPv6 solutions ensure service providers can increase flexibility to offer new IP applications, such as mobile Internet services. The successful deployment of Juniper Networks IPv6 solutions at JGN is an important step in expanding the scope of Internet and capabilities of multi-service networks in Japan.

"The goal of the JGN is to develop a next-generation network by widely promoting research and development for ultra high-speed network technologies and applications," said Mr. Masanori Osuga, vice president, Japan, Juniper Networks. "Today's announcement demonstrates how Juniper Networks is dedicated to providing advanced IPv6 solutions to customers for building the next-generation network in Japan."

About Japan Gigabit Network (JGN)
Japan Gigabit Networks (JGN) was developed by Telecommunications Advancement Organization of Japan (hereafter TAO), an authorized corporate body of the Ministry of Public Management, Home Affairs, Posts and Telecommunications to conduct research and development of high-speed networking and high-performance application technologies such as the Next Generation Internet technology. JGN also includes communal research and development facilities, called Gigabit Labs, managed by TAO. Participation in JGN is open to public such as universities, research organizations, administrative organizations, municipalities, and corporations through the end of March 2004. The goal of JGN is to develop a next-generation network by widely promoting research and development for ultra high-speed network technologies and applications. For details, please visit
