BEA Ships WebLogic JRockit 7.0, Now Optimized for All Intel-based Servers Collaboration with Intel Delivers Unparalleled Combination of Price,

SAN JOSE, Calif.-Sept. 9, 2002-BEA Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: BEAS), the
world's leading application infrastructure software company, today
announced the general of BEA WebLogic JRockit 7.0, the next generation of
its Java Virtual Machine (JVM). Optimized for all Intel®-based servers,
including both the Intel® Xeon(TM) and Itanium® architectures, BEA
WebLogic JRockit 7.0 is the keystone in BEA's strategy to give its
customers a superior combination of price and performance for Java
enterprise computing. BEA WebLogic JRockit enables companies to run Java
applications on a broad range of widely-used and affordable Intel-based
servers, thereby helping to lower the total cost of ownership for
enterprise computing. As one of the only truly independent enterprise
software vendors, BEA offers customers the freedom to choose the server
hardware and operating systems that best matches their IT needs and
resources.

"Through our now two-year-old alliance, BEA and Intel have worked closely
together to design, optimize and market the BEA WebLogic platform for
Intel-based servers, and we've seen strong interest for our Xeon family of
processors as a cost effective, high-performing platform," said John
Davies, vice president and general manager of Intel's Solutions Market
Development Group. "Today, BEA extends that capability with the release of
WebLogic JRockit 7.0, optimized for Itanium-based systems and designed to
enable BEA customers to scale up to manage massive, mission-critical
applications while still benefiting from the affordability and world-class
performance we provide."

Because BEA WebLogic JRockit 7.0 brings interoperability across multiple
hardware and operating system configurations, customer choice extends to a
range of hardware vendors including HP, Dell, Fujitsu, and more, as well
as a range of operating systems (OS) such as Red Hat Linux and Microsoft
Windows. This ability to choose affordable hardware and operating systems
for high performance applications helps generate significant reductions in
Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). In addition to hardware and OS vendors,
numerous software partners are supporting BEA WebLogic JRockit to help
drive adoption of the product. Many customers are already using or testing
WebLogic JRockit as well and are experiencing both dramatic cost savings
and increased IT flexibility (See related press release issued today).

"BEA's customers tend to be Fortune 1000 firms in a variety of industries
like telecom, financial services, and health care, and as befits their
size, these companies run applications with immense data sets," said Bob
Griswold, vice president and general manager, Java Runtime Products Group,
BEA Systems, Inc. "BEA WebLogic JRockit helps enable companies of this
size to take advantage of the price and performance of Intel hardware,
available from a wide variety of OEMs. At the same time, it frees them
from the expense and lock-in of proprietary hardware, a critical
differentiator in current economic conditions. Whether they are using BEA
WebLogic JRockit on 32-bit or 64-bit Intel servers, the potential cost
savings for our customers can be dramatic."

A major health care services company, McKesson Corporation, is one such
customer that is working to reduce IT costs while achieving its business
objectives with the BEA WebLogic Enterprise PlatformTM. In order to
improve competitive insight, McKesson, BEA and systems integrator
Semaphore Partners built an "Executive Dashboard" to automate the process
of distributing financial analysis, news about the company, competitors
and the industry to McKesson executives. The solution incorporates BEA
WebLogic Server?, BEA WebLogic PortalTM and BEA WebLogic JRockit, running
applications on affordable Intel® Xeon? processor-based servers. In
addition to lowering hardware costs, McKesson also expects to save on
maintenance costs. Because financial and competitive reporting will be
automated, McKesson analysts will be better able to focus their time on
value-added analysis rather than data collection.

"BEA has helped McKesson's business agility on several fronts," said Chuck
Nettles, chief technology executive, McKesson Corporation. "Because our
executives are getting market information faster, we can make informed
decisions and execute on them more quickly. With BEA WebLogic JRockit, as
implemented by Semaphore Partners, we are taking a significant step toward
considerable cost savings through maximized use of our Intel hardware and
reduced overall maintenance. Moreover, the Executive Dashboard application
represents an important step toward a broader vision that McKesson and BEA
are working on together- the goal of streamlining business processes and
improving workflow through technology to ensure that health care
professionals have concise, accurate and timely information ready at their
fingertips."

Before BEA WebLogic JRockit 7.0, companies with Intel-based servers
typically ran multiple instances of BEA WebLogic Server for
enterprise-class Java applications, assigning a maximum of two gigabytes
of memory to each server instance-or they spent significantly more to run
proprietary RISC-based hardware. Now, with BEA WebLogic JRockit on
affordable Itanium-based systems, the memory limitation has vanished and
companies can run applications that utilize hundreds of gigabytes of
information virtually without any downturn in application performance. In
addition, with BEA WebLogic JRockit, application performance improves
significantly because applications no longer have to wait for lengthy
pause times due to garbage collection. The unique design of WebLogic
JRockit's parallel and concurrent garbage collection systems virtually
eliminate application pause times altogether.

Beyond superior scalability, price, performance, flexibility and partner
support, BEA WebLogic JRockit 7.0 also offers unmatched manageability.
Unlike other JVMs, BEA WebLogic JRockit includes a management console that
conveys real-time information about server behavior and application
resource availability. Customers can monitor the operating characteristics
of the JVM and the Java application and be automatically notified of
application changes and resource availability to mitigate imminent
resource issues, such as memory usage or CPU utilization in time to help
avoid possible system downtime.
