SANTA CLARA, Calif., September 6, 2002 - Intel Corporation is expanding its communications processing product portfolio with two new processors for communications equipment manufacturers. The Intel® IXC1100 control-plane processor, Intel's first control plane processor based on Intel® XScale(tm) technology, and the Low-Voltage (LV) Intel® Xeon(tm) applications and services processor provide optimal performance and integrated technologies with low power consumption for cost-effective, flexible design of feature-rich networking systems. These new processors and their associated software address a broad range of network access, edge and core applications, and can be used in addition to other Intel processors and components to build high-performance communications and wireless infrastructure equipment. "Processing requirements are evolving and increasing across the network, within the platform, all the way to the port level," said Tom Franz, vice president and general manager of Intel's Network Processing Group. "With these leading-edge processors, equipment manufacturers developing infrastructure for intelligent networks have cost-effective, versatile options for delivering high-performance distributed processing functionality 'closer to the wire,' enabling easier implementation of rich services for service providers."
The new Intel IXC1100 control-plane processor is designed to provide efficient processing of control and management tasks within a very tight power budget specifically for line cards that act as the high traffic connectivity and termination points within a networking platform. The Intel IXC1100 control-plane processor's integrated system-on-a-chip design incorporates an Intel XScale core that operates at up to 533 MHz, providing superior performance within a small footprint that conserves valuable board real estate.
The combination of the IXC1100 control-plane processor and Intel network processors on a line card enables a complete solution for control- and data-plane processing. Intel's control-plane and network processors incorporate Intel XScale cores that are compatible with the ARM* V5TE instruction set, enabling creation of highly flexible software and hardware designs using a common tool suite. The IXC1100 control-plane processor and optimized software are initially targeted for wireless infrastructure equipment, such as base-station controllers and radio network controllers and multiservice switches. Intel is also introducing the new LV Intel Xeon processor, which leads the extensive line of Intel Architecture processors for communications applications. The LV Intel Xeon processor features Intel® Hyper-Threading technology and a maximum performance of 1.6 GHz, while providing reduced power consumption. The combination of industry-leading performance, reduced power consumption, and software-based upgradeability make this processor ideal for applications and services blades that handle the compute-intensive tasks of accounting, billing and policy-tracking needed for network services. With the LV Xeon processor, system architects can design equipment with performance headroom for rich network services while staying within a 30-W processor thermal envelope. Validated with the Intel® E7500 chipset and dual-processor capable, the LV Xeon processor is designed for intelligent network applications that require the highest level of processing performance along with high memory bandwidth and capacity, and high levels of I/O throughput.
