Metadirectory services, such as Novell DirXML, are an important building block in secure identity management solutions, because they integrate the user information in multiple directories, databases and applications.
The Gartner report, "Metadirectory Service Market Magic Quadrant" by John Enck, cites a steady rise of interest in metadirectory products because of the rise of complexity in enterprise networks. Most enterprises, the report states, are struggling to maintain multiple directories as they try to balance Web applications, terminal/host resources and traditional business-critical applications, such as e-mail and ERP. In light of these challenges, the Metadirectory Service Magic Quadrant evaluates the key metadirectory vendors and rates them as Leaders, Challengers, Visionaries or Niche Players.
According to the report, Novell is the first vendor to enter the Leader Quadrant. Leaders are vendors who are performing well today, have a clear vision of market direction and are actively building competencies to sustain their leadership position in the market.
