Amsterdam, 7 november 2018 --- Red Hat, Inc. (NYSE: RHT), leverancier van opensourceoplossingen, kondigt aan dat Adobe, Alibaba, Amadeus, Ant Financial, Atlassian, Atos, AT&T, Bandwidth, Etsy, GitHub, Hitachi, NVIDIA, Oath, Renesas, Tencent en Twitter zich hebben verbonden aan de
GPL Cooperation Commitment. Door deze verbintenis aan te gaan, versterken deze 16 bedrijven de lang bestaande gemeenschapsnormen van eerlijkheid, pragmatisme en voorspelbaarheid bij het naleven van opensourcelicenties. De bedrijven maken deel uit van een grotere groep bedrijven die zich inzet om de harde tactieken in de handhaving van opensourcelicenties te bestrijden.
In november 2017 waren
Red Hat, Facebook, Google en IBM de eerste bedrijven die de verbintenis aangingen. In maart 2018 volgden
CA Technologies, Cisco, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Microsoft, SAP en SUSE, en in juli 2018 ondertekenden nog eens 14 bedrijven de verbintenis, te weten:
Amazon, Arm, Canonical, GitLab, Intel Corporation, Liferay, Linaro, MariaDB, NEC, Pivotal, Royal Philips, SAS, Toyota en VMware. Een maand later, in augustus 2018, kondigden de acht oprichters van het
Open Invention Network (OIN) — Google, IBM, Red Hat, SUSE, Sony, NEC, Philips, Toyota — aan dat ze de GPL Cooperation Commitment
unaniem hadden geadopteerd. Met de aankondiging van vandaag staat de teller van bedrijven die de GPL Cooperation Commitment zijn aangegaan op 40.
De 16 nieuwe bedrijven vertegenwoordigen diverse sectoren en commerciële modellen, waaronder IT-dienstverlening, fintech, e-commerce, semiconductors, softwareontwikkeltools en -platformen en multimediasoftware.
De
GPL Cooperation Commitment is een middel voor bedrijven, individuele ontwikkelaars en opensourceprojecten om licentiegebruikers mogelijkheden te bieden om fouten te corrigeren in de naleving van de onder de GPLv2- gelicenseerde software die ze gebruiken, voordat actie wordt ondernomen om de licenties te beëindigen. Versie 2 van de GNU General Public License (GPLv2), versie 2 van de GNU Library General Public License (LGPLv2), en versie 2.1 van de GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPLv2.1) bevatten geen uitdrukkelijke herstelperiode om het niet naleven van een licentie op te lossen voordat deze wordt beëindigd. Versie 3 van de GNU GPL (GPLv3) adresseert dit door een mogelijkheid te bieden om fouten in compliance te corrigeren. Degenen die de GPL Cooperation Commitment adopteren, breiden de herstelbepalingen van GPLv3 uit naar hun bestaande en toekomstige GPLv2- en LGPLv2.x-gelicentieerde code.
