SAN FRANCISCO — (July 31, 2002) Critical Path, Inc. (Nasdaq: CPTH), a global leader in Internet communications, today announced that former United States Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen has joined its board of directors.
"With a record of unparalleled accomplishment and integrity, Secretary Cohen brings a wealth of experience operating at the highest levels of decision making with governments and businesses around the world -- not to mention leading and managing the largest and most complex enterprise in the world," said William McGlashan, chief executive officer and chairman of Critical Path. "He also offers a unique understanding of the vital role technology plays in both corporations and governments globally."
As Secretary of Defense, Cohen significantly increased defense investments, particularly in advanced technologies, and accelerated introduction of information technology across the Defense Department, from business operations to weapon systems. Secretary Cohen served as a U.S. Representative from 1973 to 1979 and a U.S. Senator from 1979 to 1997. As a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee and Vice Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, he oversaw billions of dollars of government investment in some of the country's most advanced technology. He also led for 18 years the Government Oversight Subcommittee where he was responsible for overhauling the Federal Government's procurement laws and processes, including writing the Cohen-Clinger Act that governs Federal information technology procurement and management. Among his many awards, in April 2002 he was presented the Paul H. Douglas Ethics in Government Award.
Following a 31-year career in public service, Secretary Cohen founded an international advisory firm that provides consulting and transactional services to multinationals, mid-market firms, late-stage technology firms, and investment houses. The Cohen Group, located in Washington D.C. and New York, provides strategic advice to corporate leaders; hands-on assistance in marketing, regulatory affairs and related matters; deal sourcing and capital sourcing.
"I am delighted to join the Critical Path Board at a time when the company has re-emerged as a major international player in the digital communications market," said Secretary Cohen. "I look forward to advising Critical Path in building on its impressive foothold in many of the world's largest governments and international businesses."
Secretary Cohen was officially appointed to fill a board vacancy today at the Critical Path board of directors' regularly scheduled meeting.
