Telkomsel set to capture massive messaging market share by embracing CMG's end-to-end messaging strategy
Nieuwegein, the Netherlands, 18 June 2002 - Anticipating tremendous SMS traffic growth in Indonesia, Telkomsel today announced a contract with CMG Wireless Data Solutions, the global leader of competitive edge messaging solutions to extend its messaging capacity. The contract contains the upgrading of CMG's Short Messaging Service Centre (SMSC) by almost 850%, from 160 to 1500 messages per second. Telkomsel deployed the expansion in the regions of Surabaya (East Java) and Medan (Sumatra) at the end of May. This enables Telkomsel to offer its subscribers homogenous access to all wireless applications and services. Part of CMG's messaging solution includes the Business Tools, which will provide Telkomsel a powerful platform to capture subscriber 'business intelligence' in their push to improve services and understanding of their wireless data business.
Telkomsel is currently the largest cellular operator in Indonesia with over 4 million subscribers, more than half of the total cellular market in Indonesia. The SMS market in Indonesia has huge potential.
According to Ovum, the penetration rate of mobile phones in January 2002 was 1.5%, which is expected to grow to 7.7% by January 2005. With a current population of 220 million people, this penetration growth will result in a tremendous increase in messaging traffic. Since CMG installed its first SMSC in August 2000, SMS traffic has grown 3-fold, from 3.6 million messages per day to about 10 million messages per day (December 2001).

7 out of the 10 largest operators, such as VODAFONE D2, Telefonica, Orange France and T-Mobil use CMG's messaging solution. In Asia operators such as Globe Telecom, Celcom, MobileOne and Telkomsel use CMG's SMSC to manage their traffic.
