Amsterdam, 6 mei 2013 – Red Hat, Inc. (NYSE: RHT), leverancier van opensourceoplossingen, maakt bekend dat de Gluster Community, een door Red Hat gesponsorde community zijn activiteiten ten aanzien van open storage software heeft uitgebreid. Deze uitbreiding richt zich op de toenemende interesse in open storageoplossingen en markeert een mijlpaal in de groei van de Gluster community: van een strak gecontroleerd open project naar een open source ecosysteem met een snel groeiend aantal projecten en contribuanten.
De groeiende rol van de opensourcecommunities in de verdeelde storagemarkt zal naar verwachting de toename van de nieuwe Gluster Community en open storage stimuleren. In een profiel over Red Hat als leverancier van storageoplossingen stelt IDC: “De commoditization van storage en de open source storage stack is in essentie een niet te stoppen kracht die de manier verandert waarop de traditionele storagemarkt wordt gedomineerd door bedrijven die propriëtaire hardware en software verkopen.” 1
Om deze uitbreiding te realiseren en een basis te bieden voor gerelateerde projecten omvat de Gluster Community nu Gluster Community Forge, een Gitorious-based collaboratieve ontwikkelomgeving waar gelijkgestemde ontwikkelaars en organisaties kunnen samenwerken aan open storage projecten. De Gluster Community Forge wil de groei van innovaties uit de community rond GlusterFS versnellen en de samenwerking van ontwikkelaars en gebruikers verbeteren.
“De innovatie die nu in de software-industrie plaatsvindt, is rond opensourceprojecten en ecosystemen”, zegt Amanda McPhereson, vice-president marketing en ontwikkelprogramma's bij de Linux Foundation. "De uitbreiding van de Gluster community om een ecosysteem te ondersteunen voor softwaregedefinieerde storage is een voorbeeld van hoe gezamenlijke ontwikkeling en opensourcesoftware snel kunnen inspelen op veranderingen in de markt.”
De eerste nieuwe projecten omvatten een breder scala van aanverwante storageprojecten op het gebied van beheersbaarheid, mobiliteit, veiligheid, beschikbaarheid, disaster recovery, interoperabiliteit en storage voor big data en cloud computing. Voorbeelden van nieuwe projecten in de Gluster Community Forge omvatten een HDFS Plugin, pmux (file-based mapReduce), gflocator, SAMBA integratie en Dispersed Volume. De Gluster community loopt sinds 2005 voorop op het gebied van ontwikkeling. Toen realiseerden projectontwikkelaars van GlusterFS dat de omschakeling van storagesoftware op commodity hardware verregaande gevolgen had voor de wereldwijde storage-industrie.
John Mark Walker, die bij Red Hat de Gluster Community leidt, licht toe: “De Gluster Community Forge en uitbreiding van het project markeren een belangrijke mijlpaal voor de Gluster Community. Wij blijven wereldwijd uitbouwen, groeiend van een enkel project naar een wereldwijde opensourcecommunity met bijdragen van bijvoorbeeld individuele ontwikkelaars en organisaties. Vergelijkbaar met de manier waarop de Fedora community software gedefinieerde computing heeft geschapen wil de Gluster community softwaregedefinieerde storage transformeren.”
De Gluster community gebruikt innovaties die voortkomen uit de community en waarmee organisaties een open storage platform kunnen inzetten om gegevens uit te wisselen. GlusterFS is een open source gedistribueerd bestandssysteem dat kan opschalen tot verschillende petabytes. GlusterFS is gebaseerd op een stackable user space design en kan lineaire scale-out prestaties bieden voor uiteenlopende workloads.
