Amsterdam, 23 april 2013 – Red Hat Inc. (NYSE: RHT), leverancier van opensourceoplossingen, heeft zeven FIPS 140-2-certificeringen (Federal Information Processing Standard) ontvangen van het National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) van de Amerikaanse overheid.
Overheidsbeambten die verantwoordelijk zijn voor informatiebeveiliging hebben de opdracht gekregen om meer controle te krijgen over de data- en informatiesystemen van de Amerikaanse overheid. Overheidsinstanties die cryptografische beveiligingssystemen gebruiken om hun gevoelige informatie te beschermen op computers, telecommunicatiesystemen en andere IT-gerelateerde producten zijn verplicht om FIPS 140-gecertificeerde systemen te gebruiken. FIPS 140-2 validatie is ook verplicht bij overheidsinstanties in Canada en wordt erkend in Europa en Australië.

Het Amerikaanse Secretary of Commerce keurt standaarden en richtlijnen goed die worden ontwikkeld door NIST voor de computersytemen van de Amerikaanse overheid. NIST ontwikkelt FIPS als er belangrijke Amerikaanse overheidseisen worden vastgelegd, zoals voor beveiliging en interoperabiliteit, en als er geen andere acceptabele industriestandaarden of oplossingen beschikbaar zijn. De FIPS 140 Publication Series coördineert de eisen en standaarden voor cryptografische modules voor hardware en software. Om FIPS 140-2 validatie te krijgen, worden cryptografische modules onderworpen aan grondige tests door onafhankelijke, geaccrediteerde testlaboratoria.
De validatietests zijn uitgevoerd in het Cryptographic and Security Testing Laboratory in Austin, Texas van Atsec Information Security Corporation. Atsec is een onafhankelijke organisatie met ruime ervaring op het gebied van internationale IT-beveiligingstandaarden.
Atsec merkt op: “We feliciteren Red Hat met deze nieuwe certificeringen. Red Hat blijft marktleider met een groeiend aantal FIPS 140-2 gecertificeerde cryptografische modules. De modules worden standaard meegeleverd met hun distributies. Ze ontvangen regelmatig updates en worden dan steeds weer opnieuw getest en gevalideerd naar de FIPS 140-2 standaarden. De ontwikkelaars en het management van Red Hat zetten zich in om aan de compliancy-eisen van hun klanten tegemoet te komen met producten van de hoogste kwaliteit. Ze bewijzen dat door die producten onafhankelijk te laten onderzoeken, testen en valideren.”
