Amersfoort, 1 april 2010 – Red Hat, Inc. (NYSE: RHT), marktleider in opensourceoplossingen, kondigt vandaag de beschikbaarheid aan vande vijfde update van het Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5 platform. Dankzij het toevoegen van functies biedt de nieuwe versie verbeterde virtualisatie- en interoperabiliteitcapaciteit gecombineerd met ondersteuning van belangrijke nieuwe hardware platformen. Zoals met alle Red Hat updates blijft de compatibiliteit van applicaties en certificering met de Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5-platform behouden. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.5 is per direct beschikbaar voor geabonneerde klanten via Red Hat Network.
Naast de algemene verbeteringen in het platform en bug fixes, ondersteunt deze update nieuwe platforms van Red Hat-partners, waaronder AMD, Dell, HP, IBM en Intel. Recentelijk ondersteunde platforms zijn die van Intel Nehalem EX, AMD Opteron (TM) 6000 Series en IBM Power 7. Hierdoor kunnen Red Hat-klanten profiteren van de meest krachtige nieuwe servers in de markt.

In de vierde update van het Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 platform, gelanceerd in september 2009, introduceerde Red Hat de Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) hypervisor. De 5.5 update van vandaag biedt een aantal verbeteringen op het gebied van virtualisatie. Ondersteuning voor de grote geheugensystemen van nieuwe servers zorgt ervoor dat een groot aantal virtuele machines draaien op een fysieke server.Ondersteuning voor Single Root I/O Virtualisatie (SR-IOV) biedt virtuele bezoekers een verbeterde mogelijkheid PCI hardwarebronnen te delen en efficiënter toegang te verkrijgen tot I/O devices.Hiermee is Red Hat Enterprise Linux een van de eerste besturingssystemen die ontworpen is om een virtuele gast te hosten op 10 Gigabite ethernet.Verder biedt Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.5 verbeteringen in interoperabiliteit met Microsoft Windows 7.
