AMS-IX network grows further with DWDM technology from MRV

Amsterdam, March 18, 2010 - MRV a leading worldwide supplier of optical communications equipment and services, today announced that its LambdaDriver® Ultra-high-capacity DWDM series, will enable the Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-IX), one of the world’s largest public internet exchanges. AMS-IX interconnects networks for more than 350 IP network providers, carriers, content providers and the like.

AMS-IX recently moved to a MPLS/VPLS technology to continue to grow beyond the limitations of a pure layer 2 platform, for which larger switches or switches with 100GE ports were not available on the market yet. “Meanwhile, in a few months we will move to a double density blade allowing the Brocade's NetIron MLX32 routers we use to support 256 10-Gbit/s Ethernet ports each” says Henk Steenman AMS-IX CTO. “However”, he adds, “this blade will support only SFP+ optics for which at them moment no DWDM variant is available. The edge and core routers with double-density blades will therefore have to rely on DWDM systems to connect to one another”, explaining the addition of the MRV systems to the exchange infrastructure.

"We are very pleased that AMS-IX has chosen DWDM technology from MRV. It emphasizes our leading position in the Optical Transport market" says Ed Zalmstra of MRV Benelux. AMS-IX is one of the main Internet peering points in the world and they will implement the MRV LambdaDriver DWDM platform. The network has a total capacity of 2,2 Tb divided over 220x 10Gigabit in a quadruple redundant hub / spoke topology. The developments in the optical transport market are going fast and AMS-IX will move towards 100 Gigabit DWDM links in 2011.

Wave Division Multiplexing
WDM is a technology that enables to transport various applications over a fiber. The data is converted to different colors in order to transport simultaneously multiple colors (applications) on 1 fiber. This technology is also referred to as light path technology.
With this technology it is possible to transport an almost unlimited number of applications over a fiber network.

About LambdaDriver
MRV’s LambdaDriver is its premiere optical transport system for building high-performance enterprise access, metropolitan carrier and long haul transport networks. The LambdaDriver is a multi-functional, compact, modular wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) system that supports both dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) and coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM) technology. LambdaDriver also serve as Packet Optical Transport System by integrating Carrier Ethernet Connection-Oriented services and Reconfigurable OADM (ROADM) for automated optical mesh topologies with wavelength-level switching. The LambdaDriver series can support data rates from 8 Mbps up to 40 Gbps with seamless future upgrades to 100 Gbps.

About MRV
MRV Communications is a leading worldwide supplier of optical communications equipment and services to carriers, governments and enterprises. Today's telecommunication networks are evolving to support growing network traffic due to the demand for high-bandwidth applications such as IPTV, streaming video, peer-to-peer networking, and content-rich websites. Service providers are attempting to differentiate their offerings from their competitors and strive to provide many new capabilities. The growth in these applications is driving the need for additional bandwidth capacity in the Internet infrastructure. MRV products enable service providers to transition their infrastructure and provide profitable high-bandwidth video, voice and data services.
Core technologies are Optical Transport (WDM) and Carrier Ethernet.

The introduction of fully integrated encryption, convergence towards Optical Packet Transport and the growth towards 40G and 100G Optical Networks will offer new applications for our customers. More information can be found on http://www.mrv.com

About AMS-IX
AMS-IX (Amsterdam Internet Exchange) is a neutral and independent Internet exchange providing services since the early 1990s. AMS-IX is one of the largest Internet hubs worldwide. More than 350 Internet-facing networks come together in Amsterdam from all over the world to exchange Internet traffic. The AMS-IX platform provides professional, high quality, non-blocking peering services for Internet traffic with a diverse profile be it regular IP data such as e-mail but also video/TV, as well as voice. AMS-IX additionally hosts the first mobile peering point worldwide, the Global GPRS Roaming Exchange (GRX) and the Mobile Data Exchange (MDX).
