(NASDAQ: CTXS), wereldwijd marktleider op het gebied van application delivery infrastructure, gaat de eerste application en desktop delivery oplossingen ontwikkelen die zijn geoptimaliseerd voor Intel® Core™2 desktops en Centrino® 2 laptops met Intel® vPro™ technologie. In samenwerking met Intel Corporation, gaat Citrix een nieuw type virtualisatieoplossingen produceren. Deze optimaliseert de levering van applicaties en desktops naar miljoenen Intel Core 2 en Centrino 2 processorgebaseerde apparaten, wat uiteindelijk zal leiden tot een vermindering van de kosten van desktopbeheer.
De hypervisor-gebaseerde virtualisatieoplossing is de eerste in zijn soort en brengt kantoor- en mobiele gebruikers de voordelen van desktopvirtualisatie met een gepersonaliseerde PC-omgeving. Daardoor kunnen beide soorten gebruikers gebruik maken van virtualisatie op bedrijfsschaal, zonder dat beveiliging, beheersbaarheid, gebruiksgemak, prestatie of mobiliteit daaronder zullen lijden

Het hart van deze nieuwe Citrix-oplossing is een bare-metal Xen-gebaseerde desktop hypervisor, geoptimaliseerd voor Intel® Virtualization-technologie en andere features van de Intel® vPro™-technologie. Deze nieuwe client hypervisor wordt beschikbaar voor PC-fabrikanten en bedrijven wereldwijd. IT-professionals zijn hiermee voor het eerst in staat om een centraal beheerde desktop en alle gerelateerde applicaties dynamisch te streamen in een beveiligde, geïsoleerde en client-based virtual machine (VM). Deze nieuwe technologie wordt opgenomen in een toekomstige oplossing van Citrix met de codenaam ‘Project Independence’. Door apparaten, desktops, applicaties en mensen de mogelijkheid te geven om meer onafhankelijk van elkaar en met minder beperkingen te opereren, brengt Project Independence IT-flexibiliteit op een ander niveau voor bedrijven wereldwijd.
In tegenstelling tot desktopvirtualisatie-technologieën wordt in deze benadering desktop- en applicatiesoftware rechtstreeks opgeslagen op en uitgevoerd vanaf de PC-client. Dit zorgt voor een hogere performance, rijke graphics en een volledige off-network mobiliteit voor laptop-gebruikers. De combinatie van een gecentraliseerd desktop- en applicatiebeheer met een rijke, beveiligde, gepersonaliseerde en mobiele gebruikerservaring stelt bedrijven in staat om de almaar stijgende kosten te reduceren van steeds mobieler wordende werknemers. Tegelijkertijd hebben eindgebruikers altijd en overal ter wereld veilig toegang tot bedrijfsapplicaties van Citrix en Intel.
Intel vPro-technologie is nu in de derde generatie en biedt, naast virtualisatiemogelijkheden, een uniek scala aan beheer- en beveiligingstoepassingen. Zo kunnen IT-beheerders met vPro-technologie-gebaseerde apparaten zelfs een PC troubleshooten en repareren als het besturingsysteem of harde schijf niet is ingeschakeld.

Uitbreiding van Xen-based virtualisatie naar de clientDe Xen open source gemeenschap startte in 2008 met het project Xen Client Initiative, om de ontwikkeling te stimuleren van een Xen-gebaseerde oplossing voor client-omgevingen. De nieuwe Xen client hypervisor die voortkomt uit de samenwerking tussen Citrix en Intel, is geoptimaliseerd voor bare metal virtualisatie en uitermate geschikt om als klein, embedded onderdeel te leveren aan een bedrijfslaptop of PC. Daarnaast kan het ook worden geïnstalleerd op bestaande client-systemen waar al een besturingsysteem op geïnstalleerd is.

Under an agreement with Intel Corporation, Citrix plans to produce a new class of virtualization solutions that optimize the delivery of applications and desktops to millions of Intel Core2 and Centrino 2 processor-based devices, dramatically reducing the cost of desktop management. The first-of-its-kind hypervisor-based virtualization solution will bring both mobile and office users the benefits of centralized desktop virtualization with a rich, personalized PC environment. As a result, mobile and office workers will be able to take advantage of enterprise-scale virtualization without sacrificing security, manageability, ease-of-use, performance or mobility.

At the heart of the new solution from Citrix will be a bare-metal Xen-based desktop hypervisor optimized for Intel® Virtualization technology and other features of Intel® vPro™ technology. This new client hypervisor, which will be made available to PC manufacturers and enterprises worldwide, will enable IT professionals, for the first time, to dynamically stream a centrally managed corporate desktop, and all related applications, directly into a secure, isolated client-based virtual machine (VM). This new technology will be productized in an upcoming solution from Citrix code-named “
Project Independence". By enabling devices, desktops, applications and people to operate more independently, but with all the benefits of centralized management, Project Independence will bring a new level of cost savings and IT agility to businesses worldwide.
Unlike server-based desktop virtualization technologies, this approach caches and executes desktop and application software directly on the PC client, enabling high performance, rich graphics and full off-network mobility for laptop users. The combination of centralized desktop and application management with a rich, secure, personalized and mobile user experience will enable enterprises to reduce the escalating cost of managing an increasingly mobile workforce while enhancing security and always-on access to corporate applications for Citrix and Intel end users worldwide.
In addition to its virtualization capabilities, Intel vPro technology, now in its third generation, provides a unique array of remote management and security capabilities. With vPro technology-enabled devices, IT managers can, for example, troubleshoot and potentially repair a PC even if its operating system or hard drive has been disabled.

Extending Xen-based Virtualization to the ClientIn 2008, the Xen open source community established the Xen Client Initiative project to foster the development of a Xen-based solution for client environments (see press release <
here>). The new Xen client hypervisor resulting from this collaboration between Citrix and Intel will be optimized for bare metal virtualization and ideally suited for delivery as an embedded, small footprint component of an enterprise laptop or desktop PC, and can also be installed on existing client systems that already have an operating system installed.
The Xen hypervisor includes several key architectural advantages that make it ideally suited for this project. Developed as an open standard by more than 50 leading hardware, software, and security vendors, Xen was designed from the outset to address the industry’s broadest range of devices and chipsets - from super computers to PDAs. As a result, its architecture is uniquely designed to ensure strong isolation between VMs running on a single device, as well as allowing pass through device control directly to the client in a way that doesn’t impact security, capabilities that are essential for virtualization on client devices.
Enabling PC Manufacturers to Provide Built-in Client-Side VirtualizationThis collaboration between Citrix and Intel will enable PC manufacturers to include “built-in” client-side virtualization with new desktop and laptop computing systems for the first time ever.
