Amersfoort, 5 september 2008 – Red Hat, Inc. (NYSE: RHT), de belangrijkste leverancier van open source-oplossingen ter wereld, maakt de overname bekend van Qumranet, Inc. De overname betreft Qumranets virtualisatieoplossingen, waaronder het KVM (Kernel Virtual Machine) platform en SolidICE, een virtuele desktopinfrastructuur (VDI), die samen een compleet virtualisatieplatform vormen voor bedrijfssystemen. Daarnaast maken ook het getalenteerde team professionals dat de Qumranet oplossingen ontwikkelt, test en onderhoudt, evenals de leiders van het open source community KVM project, de overstap naar Red Hat.
Door de overname zet Red Hat een nieuwe stap op de weg die moet leiden naar de vernieuwing van de virtualisatiemarkt en het invoeren van virtualisatietechnologie in ieder systeem, van servers tot desktop, zowel onder Linux als Windows. Red Hat kan nu leveren wat leveranciers van uitsluitend virtualisatie niet kunnen: een complete, met het besturingssysteem geïntegreerde oplossing, die de IT-kosten verlagen en gelijktijdig de flexibiliteit en prestaties van de IT-infrastructuur verhogen.
De acquisitie draagt bij aan het onderscheidende aanbod van Red Hat voor de virtuele onderneming. De componenten van Red Hats oplossing bestaan uit:
- Het toonaangevende open source besturingssysteem, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, met ingebouwde virtualisatie
- Een ingebouwde hypervisor die alle belangrijkse besturingssystemen ondersteunt
- Een betrouwbaar management platform voor zowel virtuele als fysieke systemen, dat één geheel maakt van servers, desktops, opslag en netwerken
- Een belangrijke oplossing voor cloud en grid management
- Superieure, snelle messaging tussen applicaties
- Betrouwbare oplossingen voor clustering
- Geïntegreerde beveiliging
Red Hat heeft circa $107 miljoen in contanten betaald voor de overname van Qumranet, tot dan in particuliere handen. De overname zal in het boekjaar dat afloopt per ultimo februari 2009 nog niet bijdragen aan de omzet, maar zal naar verwachting in het daaropvolgende boekjaar $20 miljoen aan de omzet toevoegen.
