LG ready for Mobile TV during World Cup
LG-V9000 Debuts for trial service in Germany
LG Electronics (LG), worldwide number four in mobile phones, launched the world’s first 3G UMTS (WCDMA) TDMB handset in Europe. LG provides 400 LG-V9000 handsets at the TDMB World Cup Trial Service Conference held today in Munich, Germany. The LG-V9000 will be used by members of the World Cup Committee and international media during the World Cup trial service, allowing them to watch digital broadcasts of World Cup matches while on the move. LG wants to strengthen its position as leader in mobile TV technology, developing handsets compatible with all mobile TV standards: TDMB Terrestrial Digital Media Broadcast and improvement of SDMB (Satellite DMB), DVB-H Digital Video Broadcasting Handheld and MediaFLO.
LG provided the LG-V9000 handsets to BLM (Bavarian Regulatory Authority for Commercial Broadcasting). The LG-V9000 is the only model which meets BLM’s technology requirements for mobile TV phone. This phone can provide the highest-quality World Cup video footage to our European customers.
LG launched the LG-U900, the world’s first commercially available UMTS (WCDMA) DVB-H phone through Hutchison in April, 2006. Hutchison has exclusive DVB-H broadcasting rights for the 2006 World Cup. Hutchison Italy, the country’s largest 3G telecommunications provider, will provide video footage of all World Cup matches, through the Hutchison’s service channels, ‘La3’. Hutchison plans to offer the LG UMTS (WCDMA) DVB-H phone to customers world-wide, after initially establishing a base in Italy.
Mr. James Kim, President & CEO of LG Electronics said: “Mobile phones evolved from simple voice communication tools into multimedia devices with cameras and MP3 players. Now they are further evolving into high quality palm-sized TVs. No one knows what functions and forms phones will take in the future, but digital broadcast phones bring together all of the latest mobile phone technology.
Mr. James Kim added: “Our success in developing the world’s first UMTS (WCDMA)-based DVB-H and MediaFLO phones has enabled LG to lead the global mobile broadcast market. LG Mobile TV is a testament to LG’s creativity and state-of-the-art technology, which is driven by the pursuit of providing fun and convenience to customers in their everyday lives.”
