HOUTEN, 8 June 2006 - The Dutch mobile communication services market was worth EUR 1.44 billion in revenues in the first quarter of 2006. According to the report 'Dutch Mobile Operators 2006 - First Quarter' from market researcher Telecompaper, the market value fell by 3.9 percent compared to the fourth quarter of 2005, but was up 3.1 percent from the first quarter of 2005.
The latest report from Telecompaper’s continued research into developments on the communication services market looks at the leading Dutch mobile network operators KPN (including Telfort), Vodafone, T-Mobile and Orange.
Given the steep quarter-on-quarter decline and a flattening of year-on-year growth compared to recent years, the market needs to bounce back strongly in the remaining quarters of this year to meet Telecompaper's projected annual growth rate of 4-5 percent for 2006. To realise 5 percent annual growth, the market would need to generate around EUR 1.6 billion in revenues in each of the remaining quarters of this year. This may be too tall an order for operators to achieve. As a result, we are lowering our 2006 revenue growth forecast to 3-4 percent.
KPN continued to lead the market in the first quarter, helped by its acquisition of Telfort last year. The operator's market share rose to 46.5 percent of revenues, from 46.0 percent in the last quarter of 2005. T-Mobile and Vodafone also increased their share of revenues. T-Mobile grew to 17.7 percent (EUR 256 million) from 17.2 percent, while Vodafone gained 0.1 percent point and ended the first quarter with a share of 27.5 percent (EUR 396 million). Orange dropped to 8.3 percent (EUR 119 million), from 9.1 percent in the last quarter of last year.
Compared to the fourth quarter, all operators are down in terms of absolute services revenue. Both KPN and T-Mobile are up compared to the same period last year, while Vodafone is on par with revenues in the same quarter last year. Orange is the only operator down on services revenue in the same period last year, although it should be noted that KPN’s revenue this quarter, including Telfort, falls below the aggregated revenue of KPN and Telfort combined.
The total mobile customer base in the Netherlands, including customers of Tele2 Mobiel, UPC Mobiel and Scarlet, grew to 16.90 million at the end of March 2006, from 16.88 million at the end of December 2005 and 16.70 million at the end of March 2005. Excluding the smaller providers, the market lost a net 14,000 connections during the first quarter to end with 16.27 million mobile connections at the end of March 2006. Mobile penetration remained at over 100 percent of the population.
