Hannover, Germany (CEBIT) - Irdeto, a world leader in content security for digital TV, IPTV and mobile, and debitel AG, Europe’s largest independent provider of mobile telephony services, today announced that debitel has selected the Irdeto Mobile Broadcast conditional access solution to secure its new mobile TV service, to be launched in parallel with the 2006 FIFA World Cup being held in Germany. debitel is sales partner to the Mobiles Fernsehen Deutschland GmbH (MFD), which was recommended by a national committee of experts of the national media institutes for the T-DMB license.
The debitel service will provide broadcast television and audio channels to German consumers via advanced T-DMB handsets from leading manufacturers like Samsung, who have already announced the availability of their SGH-P900 handset to the European market. Irdeto Mobile security technology will allow debitel to manage mobile TV services on a per subscriber basis, ensuring that only paying customers have access to the exciting new service.
“Mobile television means the availability of information at all times, as well as entertainment,” said Paul A. Stodden, CEO of the debitel AG. “We are delighted to be a pioneer in the field of mobile television, and are pleased to be able to rely on Irdeto’s extensive experience in content security for mobile TV,“ added Martin Witt, head of the debitel product management department.
Irdeto, a subsidiary of the multinational media group Naspers (NASDAQ: NPSN and JSE: NPN), developed the technology for encryption of mobile TV broadcasts based on more than a decade of experience in protecting digital content for more than 300 satellite, cable, terrestrial and IPTV operators worldwide. Irdeto provides advanced content protection solutions to mobile operators and device manufacturers worldwide, and is the only company with a full product portfolio of solutions for Satellite DMB, Terrestrial DMB, DVB-H, and mobile DRM. With this win, Irdeto further strengthens its lead in this exciting market.
“The DMB standard has allowed companies like debitel to bring compelling consumer services to market quickly,” said Graham Kill, CEO of Irdeto. “Though Irdeto supports both the DMB and DVB-H standards, our early commitment to DMB has given us a leading position in the marketplace with real-world solutions available today.”
