ZOETERMEER, THE NETHERLANDS – July 28, 2004 – Software developer and systems house Techno Design has announced that the latest version of its multiple award-winning Speller XT application will be available as of week 31.
Fully compatible with QuarkXPress 6.1, QuarkCopyDesk 3 and Mac OS X, version 3.0 offers Expression Control, a brand new feature detecting consecutive words that form specific expressions, replacing ‘like in America’ with ‘as in America’ or ‘graphic palette’ with graphics palette’.
The redesigned User Interface makes this latest version of Speller XT yet more accessible. Furthermore, we have expanded our lexicons to now offer over an unprecedented number of words. This number varies for each language, but to give you an idea: our Finnish dictionary counts up to 2,9 million entries.
Another important feature is the respelling option, allowing users to switch from one variant of a language to another in a document, i.e. from British English to American English.
Much more than a spell checker

Unmatched in speed and accuracy, Speller XT relies on the principle of ‘fuzzy distance’ to detect spelling errors: Speller XT presents an alternative that really resembles the misspelled word, including reversals (e.g. ‘teh’ instead of ‘the’) and missing (initial) letters. And with its OCR-module, Speller XT 3.0 can recognize and correct mistakes generated during the OCR-process.
The client/server structure of the Speller XT solution makes it especially attractive to publishers and large corporations as it allows organizations to maintain a uniform house style in all communications.
With version 3.0, we took Speller XT one step further; instead of being merely a spell checker, Speller XT has become an indispensable style tool.
Expression Control: the ultimate style guide tool
In many organizations, preferences for spelling and usage of words and combinations of words have been put down in a so-called style guide. This guide dictates the tone of voice of all the organization’s communications. However, time pressure or simply human error cannot always prevent inconsistencies. This is where Speller XT can be of great assistance. Users insert their style guide specifics, think of word combinations, words in capitals or abbreviations, in the Exceptions List editor and Speller XT will automatically adjust your communications according to your preferences.
Various lexicons
Each language collection in Speller XT consists of one or more featured language lexicons – like for instance Reformed German or Flemish Dutch, plus central and personal dictionaries. Users can save additions in personal dictionaries, which can be made available to colleagues through a client/server structure.
Each language has a very distinct character. Therefore, each speller has its own language model, describing its characteristic behaviour and thus guaranteeing its speed.
*TALO
Speller XT’s language technology was devised by renowned Dutch language institute *TALO, experts in language tools for the publishing industry. It was designed to follow the rules and exceptions of spelling, governed by leading academies worldwide. Abbreviations, punctuation marks, fixed formats like dates and numbers (financial data), and Internet addresses are also being controlled during the spelling process. You can rest assured that, as soon as a new word arises, *TALO will add it to their dictionaries. Together with *TALO, Techno Design can offer specialist and extremely up-to-date spellers for various different scientific, industrial or graphics industries.
