Aggressive roll-out hotspots, boosts Wi-Fi market in the Netherlands In a new report brief Telecom.paper analyses the development on the Dutch Wi-FI hotspot market. Telecom.paper expects the number of Wi-Fi hotspot locations to triple to 1,535 at the end of this year, in a market that is set for further consolidation in the next twelve months. At the end of 2004, we estimate that KPN has a market share of 42% of the total number of hotspots.
One of our main findings is that significant price differences exist between public Wi-Fi access services. The exclusivity of hotspot locations is one driver behind the large price differences, but exclusive contracts between Wi-Fi hotspot providers and location owners play a role too and give impetus to monopolistic pricing tendencies. KPN is by far the cheapest provider of Wi-Fi hotspot services.
Most Wi-Fi operators apply time-based charging principles, which runs counter to the 'always-on' notion that users associate with broadband access. In the process, they may loose a lot of money too, because users may end up paying for lots of 'unused' time.
