Naarden, maart 2004 - Global Crossing (NASDAQ: GLBC) heeft het wereldwijde netwerk voor het Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken van Groot-Brittannië en het Gemenebest (Foreign and Commonwealth Office of FCO) vervolledigd.
Het laatste element van het netwerk is een satellietgrondstation in het Australische Canberra dat opgezet werd om de kantoren van het Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken op de eilanden in de Stille Zuidzee te bedienen. Door de eilanden Tonga, Fiji, Papoea-Nieuw-Guinea en de Salomonseilanden te verbinden, strekt het FCO telecommunicatienetwerk zich nu uit tot 220 plaatsen in 140 landen. Dit contract, dat loopt tot 2010, zal meer dan 40 miljoen dollar opbrengen per jaar en naar verwacht 446 miljoen dollar gedurende de gehele duur van het contract.
Dit wereldwijde IP privé-netwerk is het grootste project ooit dat door het FCO werd uitbesteed. Het zal zorgen voor een zeer snelle, beveiligde overdracht van spraak, data en berichten aan meer dan 14.000 gebruikers in Britse ambassades, consulaten en hoge commissariaten over de hele wereld. Netwerkbeveiliging is een kritisch element van het ontwerp, de voorziening en werking van deze diensten.
De veelzijdigheid en efficiëntie van het FCO netwerk werd in de laatste maanden ook aangetoond toen Global Crossing het FCO telecommunicatienetwerk uitbreidde tot Kabul in Afghanistan en internationale communicatie verzorgde aan de voorlopige coalitieregering in Irak. Binnen de maand werd er opdracht gegeven tot snel op te zetten satellietverbindingen in de twee grote steden Basra en Bagdad met beveiligde communicatieapparatuur, die zullen gebruikt worden tot een soevereine regering verkozen is.
Het nieuwe netwerk wordt ook gebruikt door andere Britse overheidsinstellingen die FCO kantoren delen over de hele wereld. Meer dan 2000 personeelsleden van de Britse Douane en Accijnzen en het Ministerie voor Internationale Ontwikkeling die buiten het Verenigd Koninkrijk gevestigd zijn, zullen van het dit telecommunicatienetwerk gebruik maken in 52 verschillende landen.

The scale and complexity of this flagship government contract underline Global Crossing's vast experience in the government sector over a period of 15 years. In rolling out the FCO Telecommunications Network, Global Crossing maximized the unique reach of its global network, using satellite for local access in remote and under-developed regions of the world where local infrastructure is inadequate or unreliable. Global Crossing owns and operates two satellite earth stations, one in Canberra and another in Hampshire in the UK which is connected to the Intelsat 904 satellite positioned over the Indian Ocean and Telstar 12 in geostationary orbit over the Atlantic, serve 120 posts. These earth stations support 2Mbps capable links that are providing users with full access to the voice, data and video conferencing services available on the FTN, opening up the use of applications such as online visa applications.
The FCO Telecommunications Network has transformed the way the FCO communicates as an organization. The improvement in the FCO's ability to communicate with outlying posts has been most dramatic, particularly in developing countries where the FCO Telecommunications Network is now delivering first-world standards of communications.
