SANTA CLARA, Calif., Dec. 15 -- Network Associates, Inc. (NYSE: NET), the leading provider of intrusion prevention solutions, today announced the availability of McAfee(R) GroupShield(TM) 6.0 and McAfee(R) SpamKiller(R) 2.1 for Microsoft(R) Exchange. Building on the success of McAfee GroupShield and its proven McAfee anti-virus detection, cleaning, and content filtering capabilities, McAfee GroupShield 6.0 now delivers advanced content security to protect Microsoft Exchange 2000 and 2003 platforms from today's most advanced email threats. Available as either a stand-alone or integrated solution to McAfee GroupShield, McAfee SpamKiller provides a robust solution for enterprise anti-spam protection.
Through an optimized weighted scoring system, McAfee SpamKiller delivers up to 95% accuracy with low false positive detection. Both McAfee GroupShield 6.0 and McAfee SpamKiller provide extremely high levels of content security control and granularity by offering user group based policies to apply departmental or user security policies based on functional roles.
"Virus infection is still one of the main concerns regarding corporate security, but other factors, such as spam, are increasingly driving the adoption of advanced content management technologies," said Chris Christiansen, program vice president for IDC's Security Products and Infrastructure Overview services. "McAfee GroupShield and McAfee SpamKiller for Exchange provide anti-virus, anti-spam and advanced content management capabilities for granular control and consolidated management and reporting -- providing Microsoft Exchange customers with a multi-layered defense against malicious threats."
With new advanced content management capabilities, McAfee GroupShield helps to prevent liability and productivity issues that can arise when employees receive or send offensive or abusive email messages and attachments internally or externally. McAfee GroupShield 6.0 allows IT managers to filter undesirable content, such as profanity, sexist or racist subject matter, before it enters or leaves the corporate network by setting up rules to qualify email when it is received or before it is sent, both internally and externally. With McAfee Outbreak Manager, McAfee GroupShield also proactively prevents large-scale mass mailer outbreaks and, with McAfee Alert Manager, provides IT administrators with unparalleled notification to malicious threats.
"Network Associates(R) is committed to offering Microsoft customers the most robust content security solution for Exchange environments," said Robin Matlock, vice president of product marketing for Network Associates McAfee Systems Protection Solutions Group. "McAfee GroupShield and McAfee SpamKiller for anti-spam prevention, combined with the centralized policy management and reporting capabilities of McAfee(R) ePolicy Orchestrator(R), provides comprehensive content security against viruses and malicious code threats for email and collaborative groupware environments."
Utilizing a highly accurate scoring system to determine whether particular email is spam, McAfee SpamKiller 2.1 for Microsoft Exchange can be run as a stand-alone solution on Exchange 2000 or 2003 solution, or it can be installed with existing McAfee GroupShield for Microsoft Exchange installations, leveraging a single interface for anti-spam and anti-virus protection. With the extensive set of rules that are the backbone of McAfee SpamKiller, each email receives a positive or negative score to determine its overall spam rating, and once spam is detected, messages are either delivered to the end-users inbox, personal junk mail folder or a system-wide junk folder.
By utilizing five different methods of spam detection, McAfee SpamKiller for Exchange gives IT administrators a proactive and comprehensive solution for fighting spam:
- Integrity Analysis -- Examines the header, layout and organization of every incoming email message and applies thousands of algorithms to determine if the email is spam
- Heuristic Detection -- With a set of automated rules based on known spam characteristics, SpamKiller works proactively to secure the network against spam
- Content Filtering -- The administrator-defined set of words and phrases helps further identify unwanted email and inappropriate content
- Personalized Black and White Lists -- A set of standards defined by the administrator and users utilizing white-and black-lists to determine both acceptable senders of email, as well as unwanted and unacceptable senders of email
- Self-tuning -- With the ability to learn the characteristics of email received at the desktop, SpamKiller powered by SpamAssassin is about to adjust the overall spam score for messages received from known senders
McAfee GroupShield and McAfee SpamKiller for Exchange are managed by McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO(TM)), providing enterprise software deployment, policy management and graphical reporting. McAfee ePO gives IT administrators the visibility they need to evaluate their policy's effectiveness, evaluate their network's weak points and to customize reports to fit their specific needs.
