IBM's JavaCard Open Platform Offers Smartcards Greater Flexibility, Smaller Footprint

PARIS, Cartes and IT Security 2003 ? November 18, 2003 - IBM announced today  a new version of its Java Card Open Platform (JCOP) operating system, a comprehensive platform designed for building, testing, and deploying smart card solutions. The new IBM JCOP21-D will also support the next generation of Phillips chips, from the SmartMX family of processors.

IBM's JCOP currently supports the ProX family of Phillips processors and has extended this relationship by announcing support for Phillips next-generation SmartMX family of processors. SmartMX is an Advanced 8051 based high-security smart card micro-controller family that combines coprocessors for RSA, ECC, DES and AES with ISO 14443 Contactless Interface technology. Together, with the proven performance and small footprint of the JCOP operating system, IBM and Philips have enabled card manufacturers to deliver smart cards into markets including Finance, Corporate, Healthcare, Government, and Travel.

"The new JCOP21ID takes our existing relationship with IBM, and its success in supporting our line of security products for smart cards, onto our next generation of silicon," said Thomas Riener, market sector manager, Security solutions, from Phillips. "For card issuers and manufacturers, the combination of the IBM JCOP performance and the SmartMX chips enables the deployment of new and innovative card services that can take advantage of the 4-6 times performance increase and enhanced security, filling the need for secure and cost effective financial, identification access and e-ticket travel."

The rapidly-growing smartcard industry spends a significant amount of money on raw manufacturing processes around plastic cards, and stored-value memory cards. This leaves little room for differentiation by card manufacturers and card issuers. That combined with the need for higher security services, have made cards with embedded microcontrollers increasingly important.

"The JCOP operating system provides an independent Java Card solution to any Card issuer or Card manufacturer with proven performance supporting a wide range of cost effective product options.  It also gives customers the ability to tailor JCOP according to their needs. In addition, IBM's servicing model, putting the card issuer at the center of attention - total standards adherence, cross-industry interoperability, ability to increase operational efficiencies, and helping to lower card lifetime costs; are the cornerstones of this model," said Peter Gaucher, Director, Embedded Solution, IBM Pervasive Computing Division.

IBM's JCOP:
- Runs on compact and efficient 8 bit smart card controllers with little resources, which directly translates to saving in silicon size and thus hardware costs

- Implements a full 2.5G JavaCard/GlobalPlatform/ETSI/WIM compliant  card in less than 64kBytes of code. Applications running on a smart chip with JCOP can show proven performance characteristics of cards with a proprietary OS implementations.

- Implements functional capabilities required in contact or contactless smart cards today; DES or RSA cryptography, PIN or biometry authentication, single and multiple security domains, etc.

- Runs a diverse range of controllers starting at EEprom configuration as low as 8K up to 72K, thus can assist customers with migrating their applications across a family of processors while minimizing porting efforts. This provides customers with maximum flexibility of smart card-based solution deployment

The new version of the JCOP operating system tools have migrated to the eclipse.org base.  JCOP tools can enable card developers to build, test and deploy new and innovative card applications quickly and easily. The JCOP tools provide an Integrated Development Environment (IDE), dedicated to the development of Card based applets. Tools that assist in the building of new card applications, together with the means of loading the application on the card, and testing the application, as it runs on the card. In this version, the JCOP tools migrate over to use the eclipse.org extensible architecture. This can allow other development tools, such as editors and source control systems, to be quickly and easily be integrated into the JCOP tools.
