GENEVA, August 7, 2003 - HP today announced that it is supplying T-Systems, a major telecommunications provider and HP customer in EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa), with yet another HP Superdome Unix server. With this shipment, HP has reached a milestone of 1,000 Superdome servers delivered in Europe since December 2000.
With the new Superdome server, T-Systems can satisfy the increased requirements of its SAP APO (Advanced Planner and Optimizer) system. The high-availability server features 64-bit architecture and raises capacity to 64 CPUs and 256 gigabytes of main memory, allowing T-Systems to fully cover all of the development stages of the SAP APO system with a single server. This upgrade will make the APO system at the Bamberg (Germany) Computing Center of T-Systems one of the largest in the world.
HP also announced new benchmark results for its Integrity Superdome server. Based on 64 Intel(r) Itanium(r) 2 processors 6M (code-named Madison) running the 64-bit HP-UX 11i v2 operating system, HP StorageWorks Virtual Array 7110 and Oracle Database technology, the HP Integrity Superdome now holds the world-record benchmark result of 824,164 transactions per minute (tpmC) on the Transaction Processing Council's TPC-C benchmark.1 This latest result raises the bar on commercial transaction processing performance with the first ever system, clustered or non-clustered, to eclipse the 800K tpmC barrier.
T-Systems Adapts its Enterprise to Meet Changing Business Needs T-Systems' IT expansion gives it the infrastructure needed to handle current and future projects. The HP Superdome Unix server ensures the smooth operation of the high-availability SAP APO system at T-Systems in Bamberg. Since 1996, 20 T-Systems employees in Bamberg have been successfully using some of the most sophisticated SAP applications to meet varying requirements.
"As one of the leading providers of information and communication technology in Europe, it is absolutely critical that we have a comprehensive hardware concept, together with a single IT partner and servers that deliver a high degree of stability and low rate of downtime," says Thomas Schneider from the SAP Competence Center CSU3 of T-Systems. "We therefore use three HP Superdome servers for our decentralized core system. We selected HP again because past projects have shown that HP is a reliable service partner," Schneider adds.
In preparation for future IT challenges, T-Systems and HP are already working closely together regarding the new HP Integrity server. HP is applying its multi-OS strategy to all new HP Integrity Superdome systems, making it possible to run Linux, Windows and Unix simultaneously and parallel to one another on the same server. Standardized technologies based on these three operating systems enable HP to offer customers greater flexibility and an even faster return on IT (RoIT).
"The sale of the 1,000th Superdome server shows how satisfied our customers are with its performance," says Rudi Schmickl, vice president, Enterprise Servers and Storage, HP EMEA. "Current market figures confirm our strong position in the server market and thus our chosen strategy, especially with Unix servers. We will continue to pursue this strategy and at the same time expand our technology leadership with the addition of our new Itanium2 strategy."
