SANTA CLARA, Calif., May 13 -- Network Associates, Inc. (NYSE: NET), a leading provider of network security and availability solutions, today announced that Erik G. Mettala, Ph.D. has been named vice president and director of Network Associates(R) Laboratories. In this role, Mettala will be responsible for the Laboratories technology research efforts to include effectively managing current government projects, increasing research revenue for Network Associates and providing strategic direction to the Laboratories.

Mettala joins Network Associates with more than 32 years of research and development experience with government agencies including the Department of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the US Army Communications and Electronics Command, and private companies including Microelectronics and Computer Technology Corporation (MCC) and Elagent Corporation. In his tenure at DARPA, Mettala served in a variety of advanced technical positions and also represented DARPA in key planning efforts within the Federal government, including the Next Generation Internet Program. Prior to joining Network Associates, Mettala served as chief technology officer at Advanced Coordination Technologies in Dallas, Texas, where he consulted with clients to plan and deploy secure business process integration solutions in complex manufacturing and health care markets.
Mettala holds a Ph.D. in Industrial and Management Systems Engineering from the Pennsylvania State University, a Masters of Science in Management Systems Engineering and a Masters of Science in Computer Science from American Technological University. He served 22 years in the United States Army and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.
