Critical Path Appoints Al Shipp as President

Former BEA and IBM Executive Brings More Than 20 Years of Industry Experience and Sales Success

SAN FRANCISCO — (October 10, 2002) Critical Path, Inc. (Nasdaq: CPTH), a global leader in digital communications software and services, today announced that Al Shipp has joined the Company as president, reporting to Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) William E. McGlashan, Jr. As president, Shipp will leverage more than 20 years of technology industry experience at leading companies including BEA and IBM to drive sales globally for Critical Path. Shipp will oversee all sales functions, including sales engineering, as well as the professional services and partner organizations.

"Al has a deep understanding of technology and a strong track record of driving sales by building lasting relationships with customers," said Critical Path CEO William E. McGlashan, Jr. "Critical Path's messaging and identity management solutions are helping our more than 1000 carrier, service provider and enterprise customers to reduce costs and solve critical business problems, and I believe we are well positioned to grow our business. I am confident that Al Shipp is the right executive to lead the organization as we continue to drive our revenue in the enterprise and carrier markets."

Shipp, 46, comes to Critical Path from Inktomi Corp., where he served as senior vice president of worldwide field operations, leading the company's professional services and consulting practice while also overseeing field marketing and customer support. Prior to this, Shipp spent two years at BEA Systems, Inc., where he was most recently president of the eCommerce Server Division, BEA's single largest division as measured by revenue. He had previously led BEA's worldwide sales organization, helping the company to become one of the fastest software companies ever to reach $1 billion in sales.

"Today's business executives have a singular focus when it comes to technology spending: 'Show me how this investment will improve my bottom line,'" said Al Shipp. "Critical Path's solutions, which address an enormous market opportunity, provide the quick return on investment that customers need in these tough economic times. I look forward to working with the strong global team that Critical Path has built to aggressively drive revenues around the world."
Before joining BEA, Shipp spent more than 17 years at IBM, where he rose to become vice president of sales for the Western region of the United States. In that position, he was responsible for driving sales of all IBM software in the region to more than $1 billion.

Shipp succeeds Pierre Van Beneden, Critical Path's departing president, who built a strong sales force over the past year and realigned it around the company's two target market segments — enterprise & government and carriers & service providers.
