August 2006 – Verbatim, leading manufacturer of optical storage media, introduces the world’s first Mini DVD-R Dual Layer (DL) discs to the market. Measuring only 8cm in diameter, the new discs provide 54 minutes (depending on recording mode) of continuous video capture time on a single side or 2.6 GB. Thus, the disc label side can still be used for marking the disc.
Good news for camcorder users: The media will be compatible with some of the latest generation of camcorders to be launched in September 2006, e.g. the new Canon model. The discs have almost twice the storage capacity of current single-layer mini DVD-R discs. The dual layer technology enables users to record video without the interruptions typical for two-sided recordable media and prevents loosing any unrepeatable scenes.
The individual Verbatim Mini DVD-R DL costs 4.99 Euro, the 5-pack is available for 24.99 Euro. The media can be recorded with all drives supporting the -R DL 8cm format.
The Mini DVD-R DL media features Verbatim’s special hardcoat ‘ScratchGuard’ technology. The ScratchGuard protective coating makes the discs resistant to scratches, abrasion and traces of grease, for example from finger prints. This provides additional protection when using a camcorder while traveling or in extreme outdoor conditions.
Fully compatible with the DVD-R DL 8cm standard, Verbatim’s new Mini DVD-R DL media can be played back by the majority of the current DVD players and DVD ROM drives. With broad playback support, recorded videos and photos can be easily shared and can be viewed on almost every TV or computer.
“The new generation of camcorders comes with even more features and performance,” said Torsten Leye, Verbatim Marketing Manager Optical. “Optical storage media has to keep up with this development – both in terms of recording quality and capacity and in terms of durability and usability. Verbatim meets all these requirements with the new Mini DVD-R DL disc. It allows to record nearly one hour of continuous recording, providing ample material for cutting the perfect video.”
The Verbatim 8cm DVD range consists of DVD-R 1.4GB 4x (also with printable surface), DVD-RW 1.4GB 2x, DVD+RW 1.4GB 4x and DVD+R DL 2.6GB 2.4x.
