Avaya Unveils New Wireless IP Telephony Products For Converged Mobility Throughout - and Beyond - an Enterprise
- New VoWLAN Gateway and Access Points Are Key Components of Converged Mobility Solution Delivering Seamless Communications Across Private Wireless LANs and Public Cellular Networks
- New Avaya Converged Mobility Products Drive Increased Security, Reliability and Voice Quality in Enterprise Wireless Communications
Basking Ridge, NJ - Avaya (NYSE: AV), a leading global provider of business communications software, systems and services, today unveiled new converged mobility products that help deliver the advantages of office communications to employees traveling throughout - and beyond - an enterprise. These products play a critical role in the converged Wi-Fi and cellular solution architecture that Avaya is developing with Motorola and Proxim. By seamlessly extending Internet Protocol telephony over wireless networks, Avaya's new products improve the delivery of IP applications and voice communications for a mobile workforce, driving enhanced productivity, new cost-efficiencies and increased security in enterprise wireless communications.
The new products are comprised of the Avaya W310 WLAN gateway and W110 WLAN access points, which incorporate co-developed technologies from Avaya and Proxim. These products, along with Avaya's flagship IP telephony software, Communication Manager, deliver a voice over wireless LAN (VoWLAN) solution that will support the Motorola CN620, a new dual-network Mobile Office Device announced today by Motorola. Avaya has been collaborating with Motorola and Proxim on the creation of a seamless mobility solution, which supports contiguous communications to users across enterprise networks and public cellular networks.
The seamless mobility solution will enable businesses to boost productivity by enabling employees to use the Motorola dual-network device to have wireless conversations that will not fade or drop as a user walks around a work campus -- and to a location outside their office building. Business users will also have seamless access to advanced IP capabilities, such as listening to e-mail, accessing corporate directories and overseeing teleconferences as they move across a WLAN and onto public cellular networks.
Seamless mobility can also drive greater cost-efficiency for enterprises through device consolidation and centralized management of an enterprise's WLAN infrastructure. For example, highly-mobile employees who switch between office phones, cell phones or other devices for communications can now use one Motorola dual-network device to make VoIP-based calls as they travel within an enterprise or to an outside destination. The Avaya W310 wireless LAN gateway and access points also let IT administrators centrally manage and monitor an enterprise's wireless networking capabilities from one location, resulting in lower labor and administration costs.
"By delivering improved, seamless access to IP applications over wireless networks, the key advantages employees have in their office are extended to them as they move within an enterprise, and outside office walls," said Micky Tsui, vice president and general manager, Avaya's communications systems division. "Our collaboration with Motorola and Proxim will help businesses take the next step in deploying advanced wireless solutions that meet the needs of a highly-mobile workforce."
The seamless mobility solution from Avaya, Motorola and Proxim is in the final stages of development, and currently undergoing trials in several enterprises. Commercial availability of the solution is expected later this year.
Avaya Delivering a VoWLAN Architecture with Greater Security, Enhanced Voice Quality
Users of this solution will also gain "in-enterprise" wireless communications with greater security, improved reliability and enhanced voice quality and functionality. This is made possible through standards-based technologies and the architecture of the Avaya WLAN gateway/access points, which are available for an in-enterprise VoWLAN implementation today.
The products place all of the critical intelligence - such as user authentication and security policies - previously in multiple access points into a single gateway. With this architecture, wireless users are recognized from one centralized source, instead of having to 're-authenticate' at each individual access point.
"VoWLAN is clearly the 'killer app' for wireless networks, and Avaya's new converged mobility products delivers the critical infrastructure necessary to rapidly accelerate the deployment of IP wireless," said Nick Lippis, president, Lippis Enterprises. "By introducing better security, voice quality and reliability in VoWLAN, Avaya is driving the natural evolution of enterprise wireless communications."
The Avaya's W310 gateway and W110 access points deliver greater security by placing all of the access point intelligence and authentication into a single gateway. This helps enterprises to detect vulnerabilities in a WLAN - caused by the placement of "rogue access points" - and stop hackers or unauthorized parties from accessing an enterprise network. In addition, the Wi-Fi Protected Access standard encrypts communications over a wireless IP network in order to keep conversations confidential.
Additionally, Avaya's converged mobility products deliver in-enterprise wireless communications that features the equivalent voice quality of an office phone. In addition to the design of the gateway/access points in helping ensure conversations do not drop or experience gaps while moving throughout an office building, increased Quality of Service (QoS) based on Wireless Multimedia Extensions (WME) standards delivers clear IP-based voice communications over 802.11 Wi-Fi networks.
Scana Corporation: Enhancing Mobility Throughout an Enterprise
With these new mobility products, Avaya provides a VoWLAN foundation for companies of all sizes, including Columbia, S.C.-based Scana Corporation a Fortune 500 energy company that uses Avaya's new WLAN gateway and access points, as well as flagship IP telephony software, Communication Manager. With a large percentage of its electrical plant workers, line workers, and other employees requiring mobile capabilities, Scana chose the Avaya solution to deliver improved wireless access to their business network, driving enhanced collaboration and productivity.
"Avaya enabled us to introduce VoWLAN solutions that help our employees make faster decisions and be more productive," said Tim Ritter, communications manager for the Scana Corporation. "In our business, we need to remain instantly accessible and in close contact with colleagues and customers while on the go, in and around our facilities. These products make for more productive employee interactions, and delivers capabilities that are absolutely essential to our business."
