16 October 2003 – TeleCity (LSE:TCY.L), the award-winning pan European data centre company, today announces that The Association of the German Internet Economy (eco), Germany’s main Internet and e-business association, has decided to locate the new German internet exchange point DE-CIX 2 in TeleCity’s data centre facilities in Frankfurt. DE-CIX 2 is expected to be operational by December 2003.
The launch of DE-CIX 2 will enhance Germany’s internet infrastructure significantly and the decision to use TeleCity will help drive traffic and growth at the Frankfurt facility. With the addition of DE-CIX 2, TeleCity now hosts three of the most important Internet exchange points in Europe - LINX in London, AMSIX in Amsterdam and now DE-CIX 2. TeleCity is also host to MaNAP in Manchester, England and the French National Internet Exchange IPv6, FNIXv6, in Paris.
“The implementation of the DE-CIX 2 in TeleCity’s data centre is a perfect complement to our portfolio of colocation and connectivity services, ” said Dr Bela Waldhauser, Managing Director of TeleCity Germany. “The presence of the DE-CIX 2 in our facility will increase our existing and future customers’ confidence in choosing to locate at TeleCity Frankfurt, and will offer an additional secure and resilient location for DE-CIX members.”
The need for a second exchange point in Frankfurt, the main hub for Internet traffic in Germany, has been driven by the continuing growth of internet and data traffic in Germany. Over 120 national and international ISPs are connected to DE-CIX 1 and more than 80% of all national and international peerings are processed through the exchange, generating an average bandwidth demand of 9 GB/s, with over 13 GB/s being required during peak times, equating to approximately 100 Petabytes of data per day (comparable to the storage capacity of 5,000,000 PC’s with a 20 gig hard disk).
Ricky Hudson, CEO TeleCity UK comments, “I am delighted that eco has chosen to operate the new German internet exchange point DE-CIX 2 from TeleCity’s data centre. This is a very prestigious and strategically important customer for us in Germany, offering many opportunities for future growth as already demonstrated by our successful relationships with LINX in London and AMS-IX in Amsterdam.”
