MURRAY HILL, N.J. -- Lucent Technologies said it fully supports the Infranet Initiative advanced today by Juniper Networks at the ITU World Telecom trade show in Geneva.
The Infranet Initiative is a vision of a public network that combines the ubiquitous connectivity of the Internet with the assured performance and security of a private network. Infranets will be built individually by service providers, but will be interconnected to form a global 'meta network.' Infranets will give users their own unique slice of a secure public infrastructure and will enable them to select and be billed for the appropriate range of services and level of experience.
"The Infranet Initiative articulates the goals that many vendors and service providers are working to achieve," said Janet Davidson, President, Integrated Network Solutions Group at Lucent Technologies. "We pledge that we will work with Juniper Networks, with other initiative sponsors, and with our customers to lay the foundation for the globally interconnected networks that will make the Infranet real."
The Infranet Initiative calls upon the industry to work towards realizing fundamental building blocks of an Infranet, and, in particular, to enable network-to-network interfaces and inter-carrier connections by developing the necessary specifications and sponsoring them to the appropriate standards bodies.
Lucent Technologies is a long-time leader in the development of national and international communications standards, and is represented on standards bodies worldwide by systems engineers and other technical staff members from Bell Labs, Lucent's R&D arm.
