The University College London Hospitals NHS Trust (UCLH) has teamed with LogicaCMG and IDX, a leading provider of electronic patient record systems, to create the ‘hospital of the future’ in a £70 million, 10-year initiative. The integrated IT system will use technology and support services from LogicaCMG and IDX, to meet the needs of the patient, increase choice, integrate health services across the country and increase the flexibility of services for more effective patient care. Lastword will be implemented across the Trust’s eight hospitals. It will form the core clinical and administrative systems at the trusts new £422 million, 18-storey hospital development on Euston Road, London scheduled to open in Spring 2005.
LogicaCMG and IDX will supply UCLH’s new hospital building and existing hospitals with a fully managed service. The service will include the development of a complete electronic patient records system (EPR) by IDX. LogicaCMG will spearhead the integration and operation of the system coupled with complete IT procurement, management and support (hardware and software). LogicaCMG will earn £43 million from the contract.
EPR is set to revolutionise the way healthcare is delivered at UCLH NHS Trust. Over the next three years electronic systems will start to replace paper, medical notes, test results, letters and appointments will be linked into a single computer based patient record. Lost casenotes, delayed test results and misplaced letters will be a thing of the past - instead the right information will be accessible, anytime, anywhere at the press of a button.
At present, patients are generally given limited choices over the date, time and location of their treatments. Appointments are given out without consultation and patients often wait for long periods without being consulted, advised about waiting times, next steps or being given options for their care.
UCLH Chief Executive Robert Naylor said: “This project will deliver the essential IT for our 21st century hospital opening in 2005. It will provide the latest IT infrastructure and electronic patient record system that the Trust needs to run a world-class hospital. It will benefit patients by speeding up processes and eliminating human error, and for staff it will take the hassle out of paper work and allow them more time to concentrate on patient care.”
Kevin Gorman, managing director, Public Sector, LogicaCMG, said: “Working closely with UCLH during the design period meant we acquired an in-depth understanding of patient and clinician experiences and requests. This enabled us to devise a system, with IDX, to support those requirements and ensure the technological advancements created large cost savings for UCLH. This money can then be spent on improving the speed-of-treatment received by patients, improving learning environments for clinicians and creating more efficient means of hospital administration.”
LogicaCMG and IDX are designing, implementing and managing the infrastructure and applications for the UCLH hospitals. The new system means that patients can feel confident that the information about them and their history of care is accurate and easily accessible to any professional involved with their care. EPR can:
* Reassure patients that their healthcare records are secure
* Offer patients the opportunity to exercise choice over the time, date and place of future healthcare appointments
* Clinicians will have patient notes at their fingertips, anywhere in the hospital
* Reduce administration and red-tape
* Speed up the patient journey, faster access to test results
* Eventually link up electronically with every hospital in the country
NOTES TO EDITORS
1. The scheme is one of the last EPR schemes proceeding ahead of the implementation of the new National Programme for IT in the NHS. This is because the tight timescales for the new hospital (scheduled to open in April 2005) meant that UCLH NHS Trust could not wait.
2. Lastword has been developed by IDX and will be implemented and hosted by LogicaCMG to provide a clinically rich electronic patient record that will deliver similar functionality to the Integrated Care Records Service that will be rolled out as part of the National Programme.
