REDMOND, Wash. -- July 8, 2002 --Microsoft Corp. today announced that Microsoft® Windows® Advanced Server, Limited Edition version 1.2 will be made available to server OEMs later this month. Windows Advanced Server, Limited Edition 1.2 is based on the same 64-bit code development that will be delivered in the Windows .NET Server family and is optimized to enable customers to take advantage of the performance enhancements in the new Intel® Itanium® 2 processor.
Windows 64-bit operating systems provide science and enterprise customers with substantial scalability performance. Windows Advanced Server, Limited Edition 1.2 is a full-featured, fully supported, 64-bit server operating system suitable for memory- and computation-intensive applications such as those for large database analysis, online transaction processing, business intelligence, scientific computing and simulation models.
Microsoft will continue its support of Intel Corp.'s Itanium 2 processors in 64-bit versions of the upcoming Windows .NET Enterprise Server and Windows .NET Datacenter Server as well as in Windows XP 64-bit Edition version 2003, which is scheduled to be available through PC manufacturers and MSDN® in the first quarter of 2003.
Windows XP 64-bit Edition 2003 is a high-performance platform enabling the next generation of powerful Windows-based workstation applications for Itanium 2. The platform is designed for business customers engaged in solving complex scientific problems, creating high-performance design and engineering applications, or creating 3-D animations.
The Windows 64-bit architecture gives developers freedom to create 64-bit applications using the familiar Windows programming model, encouraging the development of a wide-ranging set of enterprise software for the platform.
Microsoft and Intel began collaborating on 64-bit computing in 1996. Last year Microsoft delivered 64-bit server operating system support for the first-generation Itanium processor with Windows Advanced Server, Limited Edition and Windows XP 64-Bit Edition.
