Nearly half of mobile connections are SIM-only

Houten, The Netherlands, 24 June 2014 - Although the distribution of prepaid and postpaid connections has remained stable “in Q1 2014 three quarters of all mobile connections are postpaid“ the share of SIM-only customers is on the rise. Almost half (47%) of the mobile connections are SIM-only, compared to 41 percent in the first quarter of 2013. Two thirds of those are postpaid connections.

These results are based on the Telecompaper Consumer Panel, a continuing online survey. From January to March 2014, 20,000 Dutch consumers between the ages of 12 and 80 were interviewed. This report, prepared by independent market researcher Telecompaper, also includes data from the four previous quarters on mobile habits and spending among postpaid consumers.

Half of postpaid mobile packages are bought through the internet, which is up six percentage points since Q1 2013. Of the SIM-only connections even 60 percent is bought online. The most important online sales channel for SIMs are operator e-shops, packages are slightly more often bought through specialized e-shops lilke Belsimpel and GSM.nl.

The premium providers are losing market share to no-frills providers. In Q1 2014 nearly two out of five postpaid customers had a subscription with a no-frills provider; this was 29% in the first quarter of 2013. Telfort is the largest no-frills postpaid provider, although its market share has declined since Q1 2013 (-6 percentage points). Tele2 and Hollandsnieuwe have gained market share since Q1 2013.

The report gives a breakdown of the principal operators -- Hi, KPN, Telfort, Vodafone, T-Mobile, Tele2 – while data for the remaining, smaller postpaid providers is combined. It also discusses topics similar to the Dutch Smartphone User report, also published by Telecompaper. That report gives information on Dutch smartphone users and focuses on the differences among handset brands. The Dutch Smartphone user report is already available separately.

This report is based on the responses of nearly 20,000 participants in the Telecompaper Consumer Panel during the period January - March 2014. Results are CBS stratified for gender, age (12-80) and education. Every month, we ask at least 2,000 consumers from our panel about their use of mobile telephony, broadband connections, fixed telephony, tablet and TV, including details on their current situation, purchasing habits, usage and churn.
