LOUISVILLE, Colo. - April 24, 2002 - In separate analyst reports issued this month, StorageTek (Storage Technology Corp., NYSE:STK), an expert in high-performance, efficient, digitized data storage, was rated the clear leader in the high-end tape automation and high-end tape drive markets.
A report issued this month by Freeman Reports of Ojai, Calif., entitled "Tape Library Outlook," showed that StorageTek's market share in performance tape automation revenues increased from 38 percent in 2000 to 56 percent in 2001. StorageTek's Performance Automation Products feature the company's market leading 9840 and 9940 high-end half-inch tape drives.
A separate market analysis issued in March by Gartner Dataquest of Stamford, Conn., entitled "Significant Shifts Affect the Tape Drive Market in 2002," cited StorageTek as the leader in both revenue and units shipped in high-end tape drives, having increased its market share in revenues from 47 percent in 2000 to more than 50 percent in 2001.
"It was no surprise to us that we not only maintained, but grew, our longstanding leadership in high-end half-inch tape drives and performance automation solutions in 2001," said Gary Francis, StorageTek corporate vice president and general manager, Automated Tape Solutions. "StorageTek has also become the defacto standard for tape storage area networks with our 2Gb native 9840B and SN6000 Virtual Tape Management capabilities. None of our competition can claim a larger or more robust solution set in this area. Our consistent ability to gain market share and increase units shipped demonstrates our advantage in the high-end tape and performance automation market."
"StorageTek has maintained an impressive lead in some critical markets," said Robert Abraham of Freeman Reports. "High-end tape and performance automation solutions are the building blocks for complete end-to-end storage solutions. StorageTek has not only grown its market share in these areas considerably, but the company has made significant strides in its ability to deliver total solutions to enterprise customers."

"As the storage market consolidates to meet the increasing demands of the enterprise, we're encouraged to see so many vendors offer tape solutions aimed at fulfilling customer requirements," said Fara Yale of Gartner Dataquest. "Many vendor companies across the industry have maintained a focus on serving the evolving needs the high-end tape drive market, and must continue to do so to meet customer demands."
The StorageTek T9940 "capacity-centric" tape drive offers exceptional storage capacity for business applications such as growing archive, backup, record-retention and disaster recovery needs. The 9840 "access-centric" tape drive offers superior speed and unmatched data access, along with excellent capacity, for transaction-intensive, time critical applications.
