Houten, The Netherlands, 29 October 2013 - Premium providers KPN, Hi, Vodafone and T-Mobile surrendered market share in the postpaid segment in Q3 2013 in favour of no-frill providers. Tele2, most notably, almost doubled its share to 7 percent of the postpaid market, whereas Hollandsnieuwe and Simyo gained ground. These results are based on the Telecompaper Consumer Panel, a continuing online survey. In July to September 2013, 20,000 Dutch consumers between the ages of 12 and 80 were interviewed. This report, by independent market researcher Telecompaper, also includes data from the four previous quarters on mobile habits and spending among postpaid consumers.
73 percent of all mobile customers have a postpaid subscription and one third of these subscriptions is SIM-only. Among customers of the operator Telfort, the proportion of SIM-only, postpaid subscriptions is even higher, at 57 percent. 11 percent of postpaid customers have changed provider over the past six months. Tele2 has the highest share of new customers, with 20 percent of its clients arriving over the past two quarters. KPN has the most loyal customers, with 44 percent never having moved to a different postpaid provider. Looking at the net promoter scores of the postpaid providers, Tele2 scores the lowest for the third quarter on a row, while Telfort has the best score.
In Q3 2013, 81 percent of postpaid consumers had a smartphone, up from 68 percent a year earlier. Hi retains the highest proportion of smartphone users, making up 92 percent of its postpaid customer base. With more smartphone owners present in the market, use of online services is increasing. Although sending SMS is still the most popular mobile service, its use declined over the past year. 47 percent of all postpaid consumers use their mobile phone for sending and receiving emails, and 46 percent said they surf the internet on their mobile phone.
The report gives a breakdown of the principal operators -- Hi, KPN, Telfort, Vodafone, T-Mobile, Tele2 – while data for the remaining, smaller postpaid providers is combined. It also discusses topics similar to the Dutch Smartphone User report, also published by Telecompaper. That report gives information on Dutch smartphone users and focuses on the differences among handset brands. The Dutch Smartphone user report is already available separately.
