Houten, The Netherlands, 31 May 2013 - The Dutch broadband market grew by 0.6 percent or 37,400 net additions during the first quarter of 2013, to reach 6.65 million connections on 31 March. A 1.1 percent quarterly decrease in DSL connections to 3.14 million was offset by a 1.0 percent growth in cable broadband connections during the quarter, to 2.99 million. The number of FTTH/B connections also grew by almost 6 percent during Q1, giving the technology a 7.8 percent share of the market.
Telecompaper estimates retail revenues for the consumer broadband market up 3.4 percent to EUR 478 million in the first quarter of 2013. Retail revenue estimates will also be included in the upcoming reports covering the TV market and fixed telephony market.
KPN, including its XS4ALL and Telfort brands, was still the largest broadband provider in the Netherlands with a 40.8 percent share of subscribers at the end of March 2013, stable compared with the previous quarter. Ziggo was number two with a market share of 26.6 percent, and UPC came third with 15.6 percent of broadband subscribers.
“During 2013, broadband connections are expected to grow 2.6 percent, with cable and fibre offsetting the continued decrease in DSL,” according to Telecompaper Senior Research Analyst Kamiel Albrecht. “Annual growth is slowing, as over 87.5 percent of households now have broadband, leaving less room for growth.”
