Red Hat gaat OpenJDK 6 project leiden

Naast het nemen van de leiding over de OpenJDK6 community, behoudt Red Hat als actief bestuurslid (vertegenwoordigd door Andrew Haley) zijn rol in het uitstippelen van de toekomstige strategie voor het OpenJDK project. Red Hat's visie omvat betere algemene prestaties en beheersbaarheid terwijl betere functionaliteiten rond dynamische schaalbaarheid en cloud computing worden geboden.

“Te zeggen dat Java een belangrijke rol speelt in de hedendaagse zakelijke IT zou een een understatement zijn,” zegt Craig Muzilla, vice president en general manager Middleware bij Red Hat. “Het heeft een grote invloed gehad op de ontwikkeling en integratie van technologieën die ons hebben begeleid naar de 21^e eeuw. We willen dit voorzetten, niet alleen voor de duizenden organisatie die OpenJDK 6 en Java SE 6 gebruiken, maar ook voor de gebruikers van toekomstige versies.”

OpenJDK is een open source implementatie van de Java-specificatie. Red Hat deed, na een overeenkomst met Sun Microsystems, meer dan vijf jaar belangrijke bijdragen aan de OpenJDK community. Klanten profiteren van een geoptimaliseerde, snellere runtime voor Red Hat JBoss Middleware in een Linux-omgeving.

“Red Hat heeft er goed aan gedaan om bij zijn beslissing te blijven om Java te steunen en daarin te blijven investeren,” zegt Al Hilwa, program director voor IDC’s Application Development Software research. “Het succes van Red Hat als leverancier van opensourceoplossingen maakt de visie voor de toekomst van OpenJDK en het stimuleren van innovatie in Java geloofwaardig.”

Java is een vooraanstaande vaste waarde in de wereldwijde softwareontwikkelgemeenschap. Volgens GitHub, een van de beste open source code repository sites, blijft Java vandaag de dag tot een van de meeste populaire talen behoren. Daarnaast is het een van de meeste getagde talen op Stack Overflow. Andere talen, waaronder Scala, Groovy, Clojure, Gosu en Ceylon draaien alleen op Java Virtual Machine (JVM), wat bijdraagt aan de populariteit. Dit komt ook naar uit voren uit de TIOBE Programming Community Index, een index die de populariteit van programmeertalen meet op basis van het aantal zoekmachineresultaten voor zoekresultaten die de naam van de taal bevatten.
