Amsterdam, 17 januari 2013 – Red Hat, Inc. (NYSE: RHT), leverancier van opensourceoplossingen, participeert in een nieuw EU-initiatief dat deels gefinancieerd wordt door de Europese Commissie om een
Large-scale Elastic Architecture for Data-as-a-Service (LEADS) te ontwerpen. Bedrijven kunnen die architectuur gebruiken om naar gegevens die op het publieke web staan te zoeken en deze te analyseren. Naast Red Hat nemen drie andere bedrijven en drie universiteiten deel.
In plaats van gegevens in een intern datacentra op te slaan en te beheren kan het zowel economisch als ecologisch slimmer zijn deze gegevens op een gedeelde infrastructuur op te slaan. Het doel van LEADS is een gedecentraliseerd Data-as-a-Service (DaaS) framework te bouwen dat op een elastische verzameling van micro-clouds draait. LEADS zorgt ervoor dat publiek beschikbare gegevens worden verzameld, opgeslagen, voorgesteld en dat deze gegevens in real-time worden verwerkt. Daarnaast kunnen de publieke gegevens verrijkt worden met privé gegevens die in opdracht van een klant worden beheerd.

De deelname van Red Hat in het consortium kan helpen de adoptie en bekendheid van LEADS en de tools die zijn ontwikkeld, te vergroten - met name in Europa. Daarnaast is Red Hat een sterke speler in het definiëren van standaarden en wil het bedrijf het voortouw nemen in het standaardiseren van LEADS technologieën of specificaties om zo een vendor lock-in te voorkomen.
Het LEADS platform wordt zodanig ontworpen dat vanaf het begin rekening wordt gehouden met zaken als privacy, veiligheid, energie-efficiëntie, beschikbaarheid, elastische schaalbaarheid en prestaties.
Diverse opensourceprojecten die door Red Hat gesponsord worden, kunnen profiteren van de ontwikkelingen die voortkomen uit LEADS. Voorbeelden zijn:
Het LEADS consortium bestaat uit universiteiten en onderzoekscentra, zoals Université de Neuchâtel (UniNE) in Zwitserland, de Technische Universität Dresden (TUD) in Duitsland en het Telecommunication Systems Institute (TSI) in Griekenland. De leden hiervan hebben laten zien nieuwe ideeën snel en effectief de wetenschappelijke community in te kunnen zetten. Naast de drie universiteiten nemen de volgende bedrijven deel: Barcelona Media, Red Hat, AoTerra en adidas.
