Colruyt Group Services voltooit migratie naar een kosteneffectieve Red Hat Enterprise Linux oplossing

Colruyt Group Services omvat een groot aantal retailpunten in Europa, waaronder de supermarktketen Colruyt, DreamLand, DreamBaby, Okay, Bio-Planet en de DATS 24-tankstations. In de laatste 10 jaar steeg het aantal winkels van 100 naar 500. Als gevolg van deze snelle groei kreeg Colruyt te maken met toenemende IT-kosten. Om klanten lage prijzen te kunnen blijven bieden, wilde Colruyt de licentiekosten en de kosten voor onderhoud en support van zijn propriëtaire hardware en besturingssysteem verlagen.

Colruyt Group Services verving circa 40 HP-UX servers in de centrale ICT-infrastructuur door Red Hat Enterprise Linux. In elke winkel verving Colruyt twee HP-UX A500 systemen met een SC10 disk rack door een enkele IBM XSeries server (X345 en X346) die op Red Hat Enterprise Linux draait. Alle winkels zijn nu gestandaardiseerd op HP DL 380 G5, G6 en G7.

Door de migratie naar Red Hat Enterprise Linux op x86 servers kan Colruyt hardwarekosten besparen. De migratie was een complex proces en omvatte een hele reeks applicaties, waaronder: Oracle Database, PeopleSoft, HP, OpenView en het data warehouse dat Colruyt gebruikt om zoveel mogelijk manuele taken te automatiseren. Terwijl Colruyt elke server manueel beheerde in de centrale HP-UX omgeving, maakt het Red Hat Linux ecosysteem de bouw van een in-house systeem mogelijk om de configuratie te beheren. De automatisering werd grotendeels in huis ontwikkeld en extra aandacht was nodig om ervoor te zorgen dat de overdracht van databestanden tussen verschillende omgevingen soepel verliep. Het gehele proces werd ondersteund door Red Hat. Daarnaast profiteerde Colruyt van advies van andere Red Hat-gebruikers binnen de Red Hat Large Enterprise User Group (RHLEUG), een groep Nederlandse bedrijven die Red Hat-oplossingen gebruiken.
