Red Hat, Inc. (NYSE: RHT), leverancier van opensourceoplossingen, maakt vandaag bekend dat het Belgische Koninklijk Meteorologisch Instituut (KMI) is gemigreerd naar Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization. Hierdoor kan het KMI aanzienlijke kosten besparen door de efficiëntie van de bestaande servers te optimaliseren.
KMI voorspelt het weer door grote hoeveelheden meteorologische gegevens te analyseren. Door de aard van haar diensten is het KMI sterk afhankelijk van zijn IT-omgeving en is een infrastructuur - die 24/7 beschikbaar is - noodzakelijk. Als voorstander van open source en na ruim zes jaar een tevreden Red Hat Enterprise Linux klant te zijn, koos het instituut ervoor de systemen en applicaties te virtualiseren op Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization.
Het doel van het project was het gebruik van IT-middelen te optimaliseren en de uitvoering van activiteiten zoals systeembeheer, het testen van ontwikkelingen en de introductie van nieuwe applicaties te vergemakkelijken. Vanwege de toonaangevende benchmarkresultaten, behaald met de Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) hypervisor technologie, is gekozen voor de Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization-oplossing.
Dankzij de migratie naar Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization kan het KMI het gebruik van de IT-middelen optimaliseren, kosten besparen en de server downtime minimaliseren. Het virtualisatieplatform ondersteunt DNS-servers, DHCP, webmail, een
FTP productieserver voor uitwisselingen met KMI-klanten en een server voor de Zimbra Collaboration Suite, die e-mails, agenda’s en contactbeheer verwerkt.
“We verwachten dankzij Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization niet alleen kostenbesparingen te realiseren maar ook te profiteren van een hoog niveau aan IT-prestaties”, zegt Emmanuel Strobbe, systems engineer, KMI. Om te migreren naar Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization werd afscheid genomen van een aantal UNIX en Microsoft Windows servers. De nieuwe Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization for Servers ondersteunt de virtuele servers van het KMI die op Red Hat Enterprise Linux en Microsoft Windows software draaien, zoals een Windows login-server, een Windows domeinserver met Active Directory en een antivirus server voor Windows updates. De hardware bestaat uit een cluster van vier Dell PowerEdge R710 servers met EMC NX4 storage.
De overstap van het KMI naar een gevirtualiseerde infrastructuur wordt in fases uitgevoerd en moet eind 2012 voltooid zijn. Het operationele team gebruikt de nieuwe software al voor de weersvoorspellingen.
