Akamai Technologies en Riverbed Technology introduceren de Steelhead Cloud Accelerator. De Steelhead Cloud Accelerator is een gezamenlijke oplossing die Akamai’s internet-optimalisatietechnologie en Riverbed’s wide area network (WAN)-optimalisatietechnologie combineert voor het verbeteren van end-to-end-optimalisatie voor software-as-a-service (SaaS)-applicaties. Door Akamai’s Intelligent Platformäen de WAN-optimalisatietechnologie van Riverbed samen te voegen, hebben beide organisaties de eerste oplossing ontwikkeld die performanceproblemen – veelal veroorzaakt door hybride cloud-netwerken – voorkomt. Dit is met name belangrijk voor organisaties die de hoeveelheid traffic op backhaul links willen verlagen en aangeven minder bandbreedte-upgrades nodig te hebben.
De Steelhead Cloud Accelerator is een extra toevoeging op de bestaande Steelheads, verkrijgbaar via een abonnement. Voor het uitrollen van de applicaties is het niet nodig om wijzigingen door te voeren. Het aanbrengen van veranderingen binnen de SaaS-infrastructuur van leveranciers is ook niet noodzakelijk. Het maakt hierbij niet uit waar de applicatie beschikbaar wordt gesteld of waar de eindgebruiker is gevestigd. De oplossing kan ongeacht de combinatie van fysieke, virtuele en cloud-infrastructuren worden geïmplementeerd. Organisaties hoeven slechts een enkele Steelhead Cloud Accelerator uit te rollen om iedere SaaS-applicatie voordeel te laten behalen uit de gezamenlijk ontwikkelde oplossing van Akamai en Riverbed. Steelhead Cloud Accelerator biedt verbeteringen voor SaaS-applicaties; Google Apps, Salesforce.com® en Microsoft® Office 365*.
Het aanbod van Akamai en Riverbed wordt momenteel gebruikt door ruim 17.000 organisaties, waaronder veel Fortune 500-bedrijven wereldwijd. Riverbed’s WAN-optimalisatie-oplossingen worden ingezet door organisaties met wereldwijde vestigingen om datatransfers en performance van de belangrijkste applicaties binnen hun organisatie te versnellen. Het wereldwijde netwerk van Akamai bestaat uit ruim 100.000 servers in de cloud. Het biedt route-, protocol- en applicatie-layer-optimalisaties voor internet en bedient 15 tot 30 procent van al het internetverkeer.
De populariteit van cloud-diensten neemt toe bij veel organisaties. Volgens onderzoek** van Forrester behaalt de SaaS-markt in 2017 een omzet van ruim 100 miljard dollar.
Pål Gøran Johansen, Network Engineer bij Harris Caprock Communication, zegt: “Seadrill, een toonaangevend bedrijf in offshore diepwaterboren, zette cloud-technologie in: om kosten te besparen, het beheer te vereenvoudigen, de toegang te verbeteren en voor het creëren van meer storage-mogelijkheden. Vervolgens hebben wij onze bedrijfsapplicaties gecentraliseerd. Echter, toen medewerkers in de ochtend inlogden in Office 365, duurde het soms wel twee uur om hun mailbox volledig te synchroniseren. Hierdoor ontstonden bandbreedtebeperkingen voor ander internetverkeer vanwege satellietverbindingen, waardoor gebruikers gefrustreerd raakten. Na het testen van de Steelhead Cloud Accelerator werden de responstijden van Office 365 versneld en er kwam meer bandbreedte vrij voor ander webverkeer. De resultaten toonden aan dat de medewerkers van Seadrill in alle opzichten profiteerden van deze oplossing, omdat ze productiever werden en meer samenwerkten met de 45 boorinstallaties in EMEA, Zuid- en Noord-Amerika en alle remote kantoren wereldwijd.”

Wij hebben Steelhead Cloud Accelerator uitgerold en de oplossing geëvalueerd vanuit Parijs en een backhaul gemaakt naar het Salesforce.com-datacenter in de Verenigde Staten. Het resultaat is dat we een datareductie hebben van 80 procent, terwijl er zes keer minder bandbreedte is gebruikt. De testresultaten zijn zeer bemoedigend en geven goed weer dat de gezamenlijke oplossing van Akamai en Riverbed kostbare bandbreedte-updates kunnen vermijden en performance-uitdagingen het hoofd kunnen bieden waar wij op dit moment mee te maken hebben.”
Beschikbaarheid
Naar verwachting is Steelhead Cloud Accelerator in het eerste kwartaal van 2012 beschikbaar.
