Amersfoort, 27 januari 2011 – Opensource.com, een communitydienst van Red Hat, Inc. (NYSE: RHT) viert zijn eerste verjaardag. De dienst onderzoekt hoe open source wordt gebruikt en welke effecten het heeft op de wereld buiten die van de softwareontwikkeling. Tijdens het inauguratie jaar van opensource.com hebben meer dan 50 verschillende auteurs in totaal bijna 600 verhalen bijgedragen. Op 24 januari 2011 had opensource.com meer dan 2600 geregistreerde gebruikers.
Tijdens het eerste jaar passeerden een aantal onderwerpen regelmatig de revue: van de opkomst van IP trolls in de mode-industrie tot open source prosthesis en crowdsourcing. De drie meest bekeken artikelen waren:
Opensource.com introduceerde ook “Open Your World” een serie forums en webinars die gehost worden door de site. Tijdens het eerste “
Open Your World” forum, gehouden in mei 2010, werden tien presentaties gegeven. Hieronder waren lezingen van de Free Software Foundation Europe, Google, muzikanten en artiesten, en vele andere personen waaronder Dr. David Upton, Chair of Operations Management bij de Oxford University, en Dr. John Halamka, CIO van Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center en Harvard Medical School.

Om de eerste verjaardag te vieren heeft opensource.com een awardprogramma gelanceerd. Matt Jadud, assistent professor computer science bij het Allegheny College en contribuant van de site Education channel, is de winnaar van de “Moderator's Choice” award.

opensource.com/life/11/1/vote-2010-peoples-choice-award. De winnaar wordt 28 januari bekend gemaakt.
