Riverbed, de IT-infrastructuur performance company voor netwerken, applicaties en storage, is door Gartner uitgeroepen tot marktleider op het gebied van WOC (WAN-optimalisatie controller) Advanced Platform. Deze titel heeft Riverbed toegekend gekregen op basis van de behaalde omzet in het vierde kwartaal van 2009*. Volgens Gartner heeft Riverbed haar omzet vergroot en de leidende positie weten vast te houden door 34,5 procent van het marktaandeel te vertegenwoordigen. Daarnaast wordt Riverbed in hetzelfde rapport benoemd als wereldwijd marktleider in de categorie Advanced Platform WOC in 2009, gebaseerd op omzet met een marktaandeel van 33,2 procent.
Organisaties die gebruikmaken van Riverbed’s WAN-optimalisatie-oplossingen zijn in staat om applicaties over het Wide Area Network te versnellen. Dit maakt het tevens mogelijk om te consolideren naar een private cloud-omgeving. Zonder een goed presterende WAN-optimalisatie-oplossing om applicaties te versnellen, resulteren data-aanvragen over het WAN tot overvolle netwerken, een slechte applicatieperformance en onvrede bij eindgebruikers. Uiteindelijk leidt het versnellen van de applicatieperformance tot een succesvolle IT-centralisatie. Het maakt niet uit of organisaties zich focussen op het consolideren van file servers, email servers, SAN- of NAS-devices of remote tape back-up libraries; met de WAN-oplossing is het mogelijk om de applicatieperformance in sommige gevallen met vijftig of tot 100 keer te versnellen over het WAN en de bandbreedte met 60 tot 95 procent te verminderen.
Riverbed biedt extra IT-consolidatiemogelijkheden met het verbeterde Riverbed Services Platform (RSP). Dit platform maakt het voor klanten mogelijk om een branch-office-box (BoB) te ontwikkelen waar vijf additionele virtuele services of applicaties op kunnen draaien in een beveiligde Steelhead-omgeving. Met deze benadering kunnen klanten een op maat gemaakte library met lokale services uitrollen in alle branch-offices, zonder dat zij daarvoor servers moeten aanschaffen om de applicaties op te laten draaien.
Naast de mogelijkheid voor kleine en grote organisaties om private clouds te bouwen heeft Riverbed haar toekomstplannen voor cloud onlangs gepresenteerd, waaronder de aankomende virtuele Steelhead voor de cloud. Dit vergroot de voordelen van WAN-optimalisatie bij het versnellen van de applicatieperformance en dataoverdrachten via private, public en hybride cloud-infrastructuren.
